THE POSITION
The Power Plant Shift Supervisor plans, supervises and reviews the work of a power plant operations shift responsible for the safe and efficient operation of power generation units and associated equipment; determines the nature and cause of operating issues and directs restoration to normal operating functions; verifies operations are documented and in compliance with facility permit limits.

- Plans, assigns, schedules, supervises, and evaluates the work of assigned staff; develops, implements, and monitors work plans to achieve assigned unit objectives.
- Supervises and evaluates staff performance.
- Monitors performance and provides training, coaching, and mentoring for performance improvement; recommends performance recognition when warranted.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports.
- Provides day-to-day leadership and works with staff to ensure a high performance and a fair and open work environment.
- Enforces adherence to safe working conditions and ensures safe work practices are followed by staff.
- Controls and maintains allowable levels for all plant emissions from the gas turbines; ensures all emission monitoring and control equipment is operating correctly and takes corrective action as needed; prepares emission documentation for manager review and submission.
- Ensures shift is properly staffed for performing the work assigned; reviews and updates operational logs; communicates to managers and staff operating conditions both routine and abnormal and maintains continuity of information between shifts.
- Inspects and signs off on power plant operations for completeness, accuracy, and regulatory compliance; inspects facilities and equipment to ensure conditions are safe for employees and the public.
- Oversees and monitors the operation and maintenance of water processing and wastewater programs; monitors plant storm drains to prevent contamination.
- Responds to emergencies and develops response to minimize equipment damage and maintain safety.

COMPETENCIES
The following list represents the core competencies needed for success in the position.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and at least five years of progressively responsible experience in operating high -pressure steam boilers, turbo-electric generators, combustion turbines and their associated auxiliaries, with at least three years working at the advanced journey / lead level in power plant operations; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process may consist of a training and experience evaluation, written test of analytical skills, interview panel, department-level interviews and possibly an online assessment.
Probationary work period is one year. This position is part of the IUOE Bargaining Unit
VACANCY INFORMATION
There is currently one vacancy in the Power Supply Division of the Water & Power Department. The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill similar vacancies in the future.
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and comply with the City's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy during the course of employment.
Annual certification for CPR and First Aid.
Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPER (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% @ 62 benefit formula.
Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2.5% @ 55 benefit formula.
