The City of Pearland, TX is seeking to hire a full-time Code Enforcement/Health Officer to lead and improve aspects of the day-to-day operations of our Fire department.
The Code Enforcement/Health Officer earns a competitive hourly salary of $21.19-$22.94/hour, based on qualifications. Additionally, the city pays all premiums for our employees' dental, long-term disability protection, and life insurance plus the majority portion of the medical premium for employees and their dependents. A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A CODE ENFORCEMENT/HEALTH OFFICER
This role will primarily emphasize responsibilities related to code and/or health inspections, investigations, and regulation depending on experience.
Job Summary
The purpose of this class within the organization is to ensure the safety and health of the citizens of Pearland by vigilantly enforcing the standards established by the ordinances approved by the City Council, State Laws, and International Code Council volumes as adopted in regard to food inspections, health inspections, dangerous buildings, accumulation of trash and debris, illegal dumping, vehicle violations, and other general nuisance violations.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Essential Functions
- Performs health inspections, code enforcement inspections, daycare inspections, and school inspections.
- Tracks and maintains restaurant facilities and assists with district assignments.
- Inspects commercial and residential locations to ensure that regulations specified in federal, state and City codes are being followed.
- Investigates reports of food-borne illness and concerns received regarding safe food preparation, cooking, storage, and handling.
- Ensures the safety and health of the citizens through regular visits to Pearland businesses and residential locations and responding to complaints filed.
- Inspects commercial and residential locations to ensure that regulations specified in federal, state and City codes are being followed.
- Assists in preparing case reports for court and administrative proceedings; testifies in court and at proceedings when necessary.
- Works with and educates the general public with regards to enforcement of laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances.
- Receives and responds to citizen complaints; enters, processes, and acquires data for complaints, research, and investigations.

Requirements
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
- Valid Texas Driver's License
- TDLR Code Enforcement Officer Registration, or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment
- DSHS Food Manager Certification within 3 months of employment
Preferred:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Sanitarian Certification
