Recruitment Range: $20.71-$24.08 hourly dependent on knowledge and experience
***This position is in the area of the athletic field crew***
Minimum Preparation for Work:
- Sufficient education to read and understand technical instructions and to prepare reports; and
- Five (5) years of experience in pertinent area.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- Possession of an appropriate driver license for equipment operated and any license, training or certification required by law or regulation to complete assigned tasks.
Nature of Work:
This is minor supervisory work in directing the activities of manual semi-skilled laborers in the maintenance and upkeep of athletic fields and facilities.
An employee in this class is a working supervisor assisting the foreperson of large groups of employees or serving as crew chief in charge of a small number of employees.
Examples of Work:
- Assists supervisor in crew lead capacity in order to execute and complete various work projects.
- Provides instruction and advisement to subordinates on difficult problems and may personally operate required equipment.
- Serves as working supervisor of a number of employees engaged in various work areas.
- Keeps operating records and makes reports.
- Maintains inventories of products and supplies, to include fertilizers, pesticides, paint, and tools for athletic fields.
- Plans and directs work projects as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of athletic field re-sodding, re-grading, aerating, and top-dressing procedures, techniques and standards.
- Knowledge of safety precautions and work methods.
- Knowledge of pertinent methods, materials, supplies, tools, equipment and practices used on athletic fields.
- Knowledge of irrigation system repairs and maintenance, herbicide and pesticide applications, and the operation and maintenance of equipment to include mowers, spreaders, sprayers, trimmers and paint machines..
- Ability to understand, interpret, and effectively carry out complete written or oral instructions.
- Ability to keep operating records and prepare reports.
- Ability to supervise the work of others.
- Ability to perform work out-of-doors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
- Skilled in the care and use of pertinent tools, equipment, and facilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to hold or feel, reach with hands and arms, walk, talk, smell and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, climb, balance, stoop, crouch and crawl. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, and depth perception.
The employee regularly lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100 pounds.
Work Environment:
An employee in this job is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and has a risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment may be loud.
