Department: Parks and Recreation (Gull Point)
Recruitment Range: $23.97-$27.87 hourly dependent on knowledge and experience

Minimum Preparation for Work:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associates' Degree in recreation, leisure services, physical education, or related field; and
- One (1) year of experience in the instruction and oversight of various recreational and athletic activities.
Or
- Combination of education, training, and/or work experience equal to or higher than the requirements listed above as determined by Human Resources.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- Possession of an appropriate driver license for equipment operated and any license, training or certification required by law or regulation to complete assigned tasks.
- Must possess a valid Florida Driver's Class B License or have the ability to obtain licensure within six (6) months; obtain first aid and CPR certification within six (6) months of employment.
- Must be able to obtain certifications as needed for position.
Nature of Work:
An employee in this class instructs and supervises various recreational activities.
An employee in this class is responsible for all aspects of operating a resource center under supervision of the center supervisor. Initiative and independent judgment is frequently required. An important aspect of this work is the need to maintain good community relations. Work performance is evaluated based on review of results obtained.
Examples of Work:
- Plans and provides instruction of a variety of recreational activities for community center participants.
- Conducts regular safety checks of the area, and immediately reports any problems to the supervisor, as well as, maintenance to ensure buildings, equipment, and facilities are in proper condition.
- Assists in the maintenance of records and completion of reports (Participation Usage Reports, time cards, incident/accident reports, etc.) as directed.
- Helps plan, implement and publicize special events.
- Tracks inventory of supplies and notifies supervisor when additional supplies are required.
- Assists the staff and maintenance personnel to ensure that the area is neat and free of health and safety hazards.
- Assists the Recreation Supervisor with the selection and supervision of part-time and seasonal staff.
- Maintains, and enforces the policies and area ground rules, under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor.
- Develops, delivers, and oversees appropriate programs and activities, to include activity/room set up and the selection of recreational activities to ensure suitability for individual and group interests, needs, and capabilities.
- Reports need for repair of maintenance work on buildings, equipment, or facilities.
- Writes news releases for radio, TV and newspaper.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the principles, rules, materials, equipment requirements, and organization of a wide variety of play and recreation activities relevant to the activities assigned to the position.
- Knowledge of the objectives and benefits of public recreation.
- Knowledge of the psychology of children, adolescents, and senior citizens.
- Ability to manage a Resource Center in the Recreation Supervisor?s absence.
- Ability to work evenings, night shifts, split shifts, weekends, and some holidays.
- Ability to instruct, coach, and oversee a variety of recreational activities.
- Ability to select recreational activities suitable to individual needs and capacities.
- Ability to resolve conflicts.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
- Ability to create and implement new programs and ideas.

Mental and Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to hold or feel, reach with hands and arms, walk, talk, smell and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, climb, balance, stoop, crouch and crawl. Specific vision abilities include near distance, far distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
The employee regularly lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100 pounds.
Work Environment:
An employee in this job is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and has a risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment may be loud.
