CITY RESIDENCY REQUIRED

DEPARTMENT: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT

LOCATION: City Hall, 419 Fulton Street, Room 307, Peoria, Illinois

HOURS: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. – Monday through Friday

The Electrical Inspector works in the Community Development Department of the City of Peoria. The Community Development Department works to encourage a safe and healthy community, through education first and enforcement second; to correct and enforce environmental and building for the City of Peoria. The purpose of this position is to inspect and evaluate the electrical installation of commercial, residential, and multi-family dwellings. This is accomplished by providing general electrical assistance; verifying permits, aiding code enforcement staff, performing electrical inspections; and keeping records. In addition, this position is responsible for all pool and solar projects and other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYEE’S MUST RESIDE WITHIN THE CITY OF PEORIA. AN EMPLOYEE’S UNAUTHORIZED RESIDENCY OUTSIDE THE CITY OF PEORIA SHALL BE GROUNDS FOR IMMEDIATE TERMINATION.

Examples of Duties

Inspects and evaluates electrical installations by ensuring safety, durability, capacity, and compliance and providing multiple inspections for each stage of completion.

Provides general electrical assistance by assisting Code Enforcement with technical electrical concerns; assisting Fire and Building Inspectors; responding to electrical questions from contractors, engineers, and general public; and creating the Electrical Contractor's License Test.

Performs permit verification and record keeping by ensuring electrical permits are applied for and issued; notifying contractors of inspection outcomes; maintaining detailed records of inspections; notifying Public Utility Company of passed inspections and providing meter release numbers; and responding to code complaints and evaluates violations.

Minimum Qualifications

Associates degree or equivalent from an accredited two year college or technical school, over two years up to and including four years progressively responsible related experience and a valid State Driver’s License required. Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job considered.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of inspecting and evaluating electrical installations by ensuring safety, durability, capacity, and compliance and providing multiple inspections for each stage of completion. Provides general electrical assistance and training by assisting Code Enforcement with technical electrical concerns; assisting Fire and Building Inspectors; responding to electrical questions from contractors, engineers, and general public; and creating the Electrical Contractor's License Test. Skill in using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines; communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to locate, interpret and quote National Electrical Code articles and tables; write routine reports and correspondence; read and interpret building construction plans, blueprints and schematics; solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.


PENSION PROGRAM: Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF): Ten years required for vesting. IMRF Death Benefit – Annual Salary after 1 year's service. IMRF Disability Benefit – 50% of Salary up to 30 months after 1 year's service.

VACATION: No Vacation in first year of employment. Earn 6.67 hours per month.

1 to 5 Years of Service - 2 Weeks Paid Vacation
6 to 15 Years of Service - 2 Weeks and 1 additional day for every year of service
15 Years and Up - 4 Weeks Paid Vacation
SICK LEAVE: 6.67 hours per month earned. No limit on total days accumulated.
PERSONAL LEAVE: Earn 2.67 hours per month.

1 to 5 Years of Service - 4 days per year (Accumulated Monthly)
5 Years and Over - 5 days per year

HOLIDAYS: 10 Paid Holidays per year.
MEDICAL/DENTAL INSURANCE: Coverage effective first day of the next month following completion of one calendar month of employment. Members may opt out of the City's insurance program with proof of other coverage – coverage for dependents is optional. The City of Peoria Health Insurance offers two (2) plan options for coverage. Bi-weekly premiums for AFSCME employees depend on which plan is selected. On your hire date, you will meet with City's Patient Advocate to receive detailed information on the plans and the appropriate premium cost. Depending on plan selection, you can enroll in the Flexible Spending Program (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA).

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT: Available on class-by-class basis, if funds are available, for job-related classes, based on prevailing rates at public institutions, based on grade, upon approval.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Three major 457 Plans available. Voya Financial, Mission Square, and Nationwide Retirement Solutions
WORKER'S COMPENSATION: Self-Insured Plan.
RESIDENCY: An employee hired on or after January 1, 2023, must reside within the City of Peoria. An employee's unauthorized residency outside the City of Peoria shall be grounds for immediate termination.
