Description

DEPARTMENT : PUBLIC WORKS / TRAFFIC OPERATIONS DIVISION

LOCATION : 3505 DRIES LANE, PEORIA, ILLINOIS

HOURS : 7 : 00 a.m. - 3 : 30 p.m. - Monday through Friday

This is skilled electrical work in the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical traffic control devices, wiring in public buildings, fire circuits, boxes and street light maintenance. Involves the application of electrical, electronic and electro-mechanical skills in the field and in the shop; and emergency standby duty on a scheduled rotating basis; with some exposure to electrical, mechanical and height hazards. Work is performed under supervision and is subject to inspection upon completion.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS : (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

Controls and works in heavy congested traffic locations.

Installs and maintains electrical traffic control devices.

Installs and maintains street lighting.

Operates heavy equipment such as aerial bucket trucks, forklifts, air compressors, concrete saws, trenchers, and cutting torches.

Installs and maintains wiring in public buildings.

Installs and maintains fiber optic cable.

Performs maintenance of Civil Defense sirens.

Attends training as required by department.

Performs required standby duty.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED :

Computer Vehicle General Office Equipment

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED supplemented by courses in electronics and solid state circuitry, three to five years experience in the skilled maintenance and repair of electronic equipment, a valid CDL Class "B" or higher driver's license within 6 months of hire required, certified with International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) within one year of hire. Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job considered.

Principles and practices utilized in the installation, operation, maintenance, repair of traffic control devices.

Policies and procedures as specified in the uniform traffic control devices manual.

Safety precautions used when working with electrical, mechanical and height hazards.

Standard practices, methods, tools and equipment used in the electrical industry.

Principles of electricity and electrical circuits.

Policies and procedures as specified in the Manual on Uniformed Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

All computer applications and hardware related to performance of the essential functions of the job.

Skill in :

Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.

Communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up on assignments with a minimum of direction.

Mental and Physical Abilities :

Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional periodicals and journals, technical procedures and government regulations.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.

Ability to understand and follow electrical diagrams.

Ability to maintain records of work performed.

Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.

Ability to use and care of hand and bench tools.

Ability to establish and maintain effecting working relationships with the public and other City employees.

PENSION PROGRAM : Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) : Ten years required for vesting. IMRF Death Benefit - Annual Salary after 1 year's service. IMRF Disability Benefit - 50% of Salary up to 30 months after 1 year's service.

UNION MEMBERSHIP AVAILABLE : International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - Local Union 51 - Union dues through payroll deduction.

VACATION : No Vacation in first year of employment. Earn 6.67 hours per month. (If employee begins service prior to 15th of the month, they will be given vacation credit for the full month)

Thru the 5th Year of Service - Accrue 6.67 hours per month

6th Year of Service - Accrue 7.34 hours per month

7th Year of Service - Accrue 8.00 hours per month

8th Year of Service - Accrue 8.67 hours per month

9th Year of Service - Accrue 9.34 hours per month

10th Year of Service -Accrue 10.00 hours per month

11th Year of Service - Accrue 10.67 hours per month

12th Year of Service - Accrue 11.34 hours per month

13th Year of Service - Accrue 12.00 hours per month

14th Year of Service - Accrue 12.67 hours per month

15th Year of Service - Accrue 13.34 hours per month

SICK LEAVE : Shall accrue on a basis of 6.67 hours per month. No limit on total days accumulated.

PERSONAL LEAVE : In the first calendar year of employment, no credits will be granted. On January 1st of the first, second, third and fourth full year of employment, the employee will be granted 32 hours of personal time for use in the year. Each year beginning with the fifth full year of service, employees will be granted 40 hours of personal time for use during the year. Personal time, if not used in the year granted, will be lost.

HOLIDAYS : 10 Paid Holidays per year.

MEDICAL / DENTAL INSURANCE : Coverage effective first day of the next month following completion of one calendar month of employment. Members may opt out of the City's insurance program with proof of other coverage - coverage for dependents is optional. The City of Peoria Health Insurance offers two (2) plan options for coverage. Bi-weekly premiums for employees depend on which plan is selected. On your hire date, you will meet with City's Patient Advocate to receive detailed information on the plans and the appropriate premium cost. Depending on plan selection, you can enroll in the Flexible Spending Program (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA).

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT : Available on class-by-class basis, for job-related classes, based on prevailing rates at public institutions, based on grade, upon approval.

WORKER'S COMPENSATION : Self-Insured Plan.

RESIDENCY : You are required to establish residency within Peoria city limits within one year of employment. However, if you choose to waive that requirement, you must live within a twenty (20) mile radius of City Hall and give up (2%) of your base pay for five (5) years. You will need to complete a Waiver of Residency form in the Human Resources Department.
