Job Summary
Under general supervision of the Technical Services Manager assists in providing administrative, technical and customer assistance to Librarians and Library patrons. Provides the support necessary to ensure that library patrons gain access to available resources. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with clearly established policies and procedures. Frequently interfaces with library patrons; may interact with other City departments and external publics occasionally. Exercises moderate levels of judgement / initiative and works with minimal supervision.
Essential Job Functions and Other Important Duties
- Provide customer service from the circulation desk to : check in / out books and other library materials; issue library cards; collect over-due fees.
- Assist library patrons in identifying and locating library books and materials.
- Prepare and receive book orders; process new books for use.
- Return library resources / materials to appropriate locations.
- Prepare reports and statistics as requested by the Library Director.
- Assists Library patrons at circulation desk with book returns and checkouts, payment of fines, and completing Library card application and hold request forms.
- Collects payments for Library book sales.
- Empties book drop and book collection areas, returns books to available status using catalogue system and shelves Library materials according to established procedures.
- Inspects returned books for damage, and makes minor repairs to book covers, spines and labels.
- Organizes books into their Dewey number and files them properly.
- Processes new and donated books by bar-coding, stamping, dating, laminating, coving, typing and affixing spine labels.
- Repairs, cleans and evaluates condition of books and removes damaged books and materials from general circulation.
- Assists with mailing overdue notices
- Maintains the order and cleanliness Library areas and holdings
- Prepares order for replenishing library office supplies and submits them to the Technical Services and Library Finance Administrator.
- Receives library materials.
- Sorts donated books for Collection Development staff to view and to include in the Annual Book Sale.
- Opens and prepares Library common areas, computers, office equipment and other search tools.
- Logs into database statistics of patrons, reference questions and Library usage statistics.
- Receives and logs interlibrary loans, notifies patrons of arrivals of requested materials.
- Counts monies received for damaged books, overdue fines and copy charges and completes revenue deposit forms.
- Logs incoming mail, sorts and distributes to appropriate personnel and delivers outgoing mail to City Hall for postage and post office for delivery.
Job Qualifications
Formal Education : High School diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of college courses.
Relatable Work Experience : One (1) year of experience working in an office / library environment.

One year of full-time experience is define as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed & Environmental Factors and Other Physical Requirements
Knowledge of library shelving procedures.
Knowledge of customer service methods and techniques.
Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
Skill in utilizing a personal computer, associated software programs, including Windows and Microsoft Office applications.
Skill in assisting with circulation desk activities including shelving and retrieving books.
Skill in sorting, evaluating and repairing library books, materials and equipment.
Skill in database entry, retrieval and research.
Ability to establish and maintain professionally effective relationships with external public / vendors, internal management and non-management employees, and City and other government officials.
Ability to develop, implement, and administer goals, objectives, and procedures for providing effective and efficient services for the City..
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, as well as strong time and task management skills.
Subject to sitting and standing to perform essential functions in an office environment; must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
Visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate office equipment
