About The Position
This is court enforcement work servicing legal documents and executing a wide variety of civil and criminal court orders and conducting investigations relative to work assignments. Work differs from that of the Deputy Sheriff in that the incumbents are responsible for making and completing civil investigations. Employees in this class are frequently required to work irregular hours to serve legal papers, make arrests, and perform extraditions. The ability to deal firmly and courteously with hostile members of the public is of major significance to the work.
Work is performed under the supervision of a higher level deputy sheriff.
Assignments require evaluative thinking and are carried out in accordance with standard departmental practices and general work instructions. Employees in this class have controlling responsibility for serving and executing court orders in an assigned sector of a district. Work involves environmental conditions, which can be only partially controlled and light physical effort.

ELIGIBLE LIST: DEPARTMENTAL-ONLY PROMOTIONAL
Only a departmental promotional eligible list for the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office will be established as a result of the examination.
Candidates who pass the exam and are placed on the civil service list will be retained on the list for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years after the establishment of the Eligible List.
PREFERENCE FOR PHILADELPHIA RESIDENTS
Candidates who have maintained a bona fide residence in Philadelphia for at least one year prior to the date of the civil service examination shall have priority over all other persons receiving an identical test score. If you have maintained a bona fide residence in Philadelphia for at least one year immediately preceding May 17, 2025, you are eligible to claim residency preference.
To receive such preference, candidates must respond to the question regarding residence later in this form.
The response on this application will be used to determine eligibility for preference for residents. Documentation of residence may be required if there is any question as to whether you meet the residency preference requirements.
If an applicant does not respond to the appropriate residence question, it will be assumed that the applicant does not qualify for residence preference. Eligibility for residence preference must be determined by the date of the test administration. No requests for residence preference will be granted after the test administration.
