About This Position
he Fleet Technician Apprenticeship program is a two-year program and was developed to attract and train individuals with the desire to become a skilled fleet technician with the City of Phoenix, underfilling our Equipment Service Worker II role.
Apprentices perform a variety of semiskilled tasks in maintaining and repairing a wide variety of on and off-highway equipment for the City of Phoenix. Assignments are routine at the beginning of the program. As an apprentice's knowledge and skill increases, the complexity of assignments increases until performance and technical ability are at the journey level. Participation in the program requires apprentices to attend courses provided by partnering educational institutions. Coursework is subject to a curriculum schedule and may require the incumbent to attend day or evening classes. Additionally, the incumbent may change work schedules (I.e., day, evening and night shifts) to accommodate coursework and job training that must be completed within the program guidelines. No experience is required prior to starting the program. All required training is paid for and provided by the City of Phoenix while on-the-job and being employed full-time.

Job Duties Include
- Participates, as an apprentice, to learn the maintenance and repair trade for on-and off-highway equipment.
- Works in conjunction with an educational institution and assigned staff within the division to master core inspection, diagnosis, and repair services associated with: engines (ignition and compression type), fuel systems (traditional and alternative type), ignition systems, exhaust systems, electrical/electronic systems, cooling systems, heating/ventilation/air conditioning systems (HVAC), steering/suspension systems, braking systems (hydraulic and air), transmission/drive axle systems, and hydraulic system.
- Learns and complies with all shop safety and environmental practices, including mandatory training.
- Learns to apply core fundamental subject areas to a variety of equipment within a government fleet (i.e., fire apparatus, street sweepers, refuse trucks).
- Learns to provide core on and off-highway equipment maintenance services.
- Learns to perform basic welding and fabrication skills.
- Demonstrates superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity.

- Think logically and follow oral and written instructions.
- Comprehend mechanical, electrical, and computerized systems within on and off-highway equipment.
- Use critical thinking and logic to solve complex problems when facing troubleshooting scenarios requiring resolution.
- Learn the tools, theory, and terminology associated with the automotive repair industry
- Use hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and perform work with manual dexterity.
- $19.54 / hour starting wage as an apprentice.
- $20.51 / hour after 1,000 on-the-job training (OJT) hours of successful performance as an apprentice.
- $21.54 / hour after 2,000 OJT hours of successful performance as an apprentice.
- $22.61 / hour after 3,000 OJT hours of successful performance as an apprentice.
- $23.74 / hour after 4,000 OJT hours of successful performance as an apprentice, including promotion to Equipment Service Worker II.

Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to read and comprehend written material at a level appropriate for the class.
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED at the time of hire.
- Must successfully attend a fleet services information session.
- Requires:
- Ability to perceive the full range of the color spectrum.
- Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings as needed.
- Working at heights greater than 10 feet and move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (more than 20 feet).
- Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust for extended periods of time.
- Maintaining regular and reliable attendance.
- All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
- Must hold a Class D or equivalent license for one year and prove one year of driving experience in a vehicle other than a motorcycle.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
