About This Position
Phoenix Public Library serves a diverse clientele of over 4.8 million people, with a Burton Barr Central Library and 16 branches. The library offers collections in multiple languages, a full range of cutting-edge electronic resources and customer focused public services. A Library Circulation Attendant I provides direct customer service in person, via telephone or email and performs a variety of clerical tasks in the Burton Bar Central Library or one of the branch locations. They issue library cards, process customer payments, manage and balance cash drawers, and assist customers with checking out materials on a daily basis. They also provide basic customer service in using the copy machines, making computer reservations and printing, and placing holds on library materials.
The Phoenix Public Library is looking to fill multiple full- and part-time positions in this classification to perform customer service and clerical work at a circulation desk in either the Central Library or one of the branch libraries.
Employees in this role frequently contact the public by phone and in person as well as assist library users in obtaining library cards, paying library charges, and checking materials in and out of the library.
Detailed instructions are given during the initial stages of employment, and after employees learn the proper procedures, they work independently.
Work is performed under the general supervision of a Library Clerical Supervisor, Librarian II, or Librarian III, and some positions are unsupervised during a significant portion of the work week due to extended service hours.
Essential Functions
Pay Range: $16.88 to $23.74 per hour.
Hiring Range: $16.88 to $19.54 per hour.

Essential Functions
- Checks library materials in and out using a computer and assists library customers with using the self-check-out machines.
- Enters customer information and transaction records accurately into a computer database using a keyboard or scanner.
- Inspect incoming materials for damage and complete item damage form and library customers' identification, explains library card rules and policies, and issues library cards.
- Searches library customers' records and notifies customers of overdue and lost books as well as processes hold requests and interlibrary loan materials for library customers.
- Answers library customers' questions regarding circulation policies and refers customers to the appropriate staff person when professional assistance is necessary.
- Balances cash drawer by reconciling daily cash reports and following written procedures for submittal and process cash deposits.
- Performs routine opening and closing duties at the circulation desk.
- Searches for lost or misplaced library materials and investigate and resolve circulation problems in a timely manner.
- Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
- Demonstrates superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity.
- The ideal candidate must be able to multi-task, resolve problems and work with a diverse customer base in a fast-paced environment with the ability to work independently.
- Ability to communicate in Spanish is highly desirable.
Pay Range: $16.88 to $23.74 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications
- One year of library clerical experience.
- AND One-year general clerical experience, including experience serving the public and demonstrated typing skills.
- OR One year experience at the level of Library Clerk I.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
