Plumbing/Mechanical Inspectors II - Planning and Development (Underfill Opportunity)

About This Position

The Planning & Development Department (PDD) guides the physical development of the city by preserving our historic sites, planning what can be built where, and ensuring safe construction of buildings and infrastructure. A host of advisory and governing bodies of residents as well as elected officials provide oversight as the city grows and needs arise. The process is governed through development and enforcement of city codes and ordinances. Currently PDD has a vacancy for Plumbing/Mechanical Inspectors II.

Plumbing/Mechanical Inspectors II inspect and evaluate new and existing construction work which may include plumbing, heating, ventilating, cooling systems, and secondary backflow protection devices, for compliance with City Codes, special regulations, approved plans, and other requirements related to non-residential buildings. These Inspectors make decisions requiring technical discretion, sound judgment and familiarity with a variety of installation and repair problems.

Opportunity to Underfill at the Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector I level.

Consideration may be given to candidates to underfill as a Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector I. Candidates selected to underfill are promoted to the level II after two years of successful performance and achieving all certifications on the job. Candidates at both levels should apply to this recruitment.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

• Knowledge of methods and practices involved in installing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of plumbing and mechanical systems and equipment.
• Knowledge of uniform plumbing and mechanical codes and associated rules, regulations, and standards.
• Ability to detect possible defects and faults in plumbing and mechanical systems and recommend or stipulate appropriate remedial measures.
  
  
  

SALARY

Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector II

Pay Range: $31.06 to $45.89 per hour.

Hiring Range: $31.06 to $39.64 per hour.

Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector I

Pay Range: $24.34 to $39.64 per hour.

Hiring Range: $24.34 to $34.25 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications

Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector II

• Two years of experience inspecting and evaluating plumbing, heating, ventilating, and cooling systems for compliance with approved plans, Phoenix Construction Code, and related requirements. Two years at the level of Plumbing/ Mechanical Inspector I.
• By the end of probation, must possess two of the following certifications, one in each of the Plumbing AND Mechanical disciplines:
• One Plumbing certification
• IAPMO UPC Residential and Commercial Plumbing Inspector (PI) OR
• ICC Commercial Plumbing Inspector (P2)
• AND One Mechanical certification
• IAPMO UMC Residential and Commercial Mechanical Inspector (MI) OR
• ICC Commercial Mechanical Inspector (M2)
• *For Backflow Inspector, must ALSO obtain:
• ASSE or ABPA Backflow General Tester
• Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
• The City job description can be found here .
• All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
• Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector I

• Three years of experience as a journey-level plumber or HVAC installer skilled in new or remodeling work on commercial, industrial, or multistory residential projects.
• Or certification by a model code agency as a Plumbing Inspector or Mechanical Inspector.
• By the end of probation, must obtain one of the following certifications for either the Plumbing OR Mechanical discipline:
• Plumbing:
• IAPMO UPC Residential and Commercial Plumbing Inspector (PI)
• ICC Commercial Plumbing Inspector (P2)
• Mechanical:
• IAPMO UMC Residential and Commercial Mechanical Inspector (MI)
• ICC Commercial Mechanical Inspector (M2)
• *For Backflow Inspector, must ALSO obtain:
• ASSE or ABPA Backflow General Tester
• Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

• Five years of journeyman level experience.
• Three years of foreman level experience on commercial projects.
• Completion of a Plumbing or Mechanical Apprenticeship.
• Experience reading Blueprints for construction projects.
• Experience in Plumbing or Mechanical Inspections.
• Experience interacting with construction design professionals.
• Training, teaching, or mentoring experience.
• Computer experience, including data entry.
