About This Position

The Planning & Development Department guides the physical development of the city by preserving our historic sites, planning what can be built where, and ensuring safe construction of buildings and infrastructure. A host of advisory and governing bodies of residents as well as elected officials provide oversight as the city grows and needs arise. The process is governed through development and enforcement of city codes and ordinances.

The Planner I is responsible for a variety of tasks that include: preparing zoning reports; researching and analyzing field data, case histories and ordinances; participating in site/design/subdivision reviews and related development plan processing; communicating ordinance requirements to developers and the public; staffing public hearings; analyzing data of neighborhoods and larger areas and prepares assessments; assisting citizen committees in preparing neighborhood or larger area plans; assisting in writing and implementing redevelopment plans and working on updating and preparing General Plan Elements and Specific Plans.

The Planner I in the Zoning Division is responsible for a variety of tasks that include preparing zoning reports; researching case history and ordinances; assisting at public hearings; assisting with special planning projects; and assisting customers with processing applications, reviewing plans for zoning compliance, and providing zoning case history and zoning regulations. Customers include property owners, design and real estate professionals, attorneys, consultants, and other city staff.

  • Ability to provide an excellent customer service interaction.
  • Ability to multitask (i.e. handling significant problems and tasks which come up simultaneously and/or unexpectedly with strict deadlines).
  • Ability to explain technical details in a nontechnical manner.
  • Demonstrates effective written and oral communications.


SALARY

Pay Range: $63,044.80 to $107,806.40 annually.

Hiring Range: $63,044.80 to $84,052.80 annually.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in city or urban planning, landscape architecture, engineering, architecture, political science, or a related field.
  • One year of planning experience.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or city vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience applying local, state and federal requirements and regulations related to zoning and building codes.
  • Experience creating maps using GIS and AutoCAD software including digitizing and data manipulation procedures for geographic information systems.
  • Experience with planning and zoning research.
  • Experience giving public presentations, meetings, and hearings.
  • Experience with plan review and/or reviewing site plans.
  • Customer service experience, particularly experience in a front counter customer service environment.
  • Bilingual, ability to speak and write in Spanish is preferred.
