What are the responsibilities and job description for the HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR III position at City of Picayune?
This is a skilled full-time position under the administration of the Public Works Department.
This job requires the employ to have a Class A commercial driver’s license. Primary responsibility is safe and efficient operation of light and heavy-duty trucks and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of the streets, catch basins, canals, sewer lines, right-of-ways, and other public works projects. This employee must possess the ability to make prudent and independent decisions as it applies to assigned daily activities. This position may require managing other employees.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
· Operates one or more of the following pieces of equipment and vehicles: grapple loader, front end loader, rubber-tired backhoe, tandem and single axle dump trucks, excavator, skid steer, vacuum trailer, sweeper, side mower, tractor with implements, backhoe or similar equipment.
· Cleans canals, digs ditches for storm drains, digs up old lines; clears right-of-ways for new roads, canals, water, and sewer lines; places driveway pipes, grades dirt roads, prepares roads for paving, repairs road shoulders, picks up roadside debris, etc.
· Performs daily preventive maintenance and services of equipment and notifies mechanic of any repairs needed.
· The employee will operate and maintain light duty equipment such as electrical, and battery powered hand tools such as but not limited to weed eaters, blowers, chain saws, drills, saws, air compressors, battery chargers, augers, trenchers, pressure washers, lawn mowers, pickup trucks, etc. Employee will also be required to effectively tow trailers with the pickup truck.
· Responds to public inquiries in a professional manner.
· May require supervision of other employees.
· Performs related duties as required.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
· Ability to perform general physical activities required by the job, which include but are not limited to: lifting, reaching, climbing stairs and ladders, carrying heavy loads, normal hearing, sight, and speaking abilities, hand-eye coordination, grasping, bending, writing, walking, and driving.
· Ability to perform strenuous work under adverse weather conditions.
· Basic knowledge of how to perform routine maintenance on equipment.
· Attention to detail.
· Ability to follow oral and written instruction and willingness to work as directed.
· Ability to speak fluently when conveying information to others.
· Must be able to read, write and formulate words into sentences and paragraphs.
· Must be able to determine tools and equipment needed to complete a job.
· Must have normal vision -the ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
· Knowledge of the functions, operating methods and care required in the operation of equipment used in public works department.
· Knowledge of the basic maintenance requirements of heavy equipment.
· Knowledge of the work hazards, safety precautions, and traffic laws relating to operation of equipment.
· Ability to supervise other employees.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
· High School Diploma or G.E.D.
· Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License.
· Two (2) Years of experience in operating heavy construction equipment.

Pay: $15.00 - $16.25 per hour
