What are the responsibilities and job description for the Referee position at City of Piedmont?
DEFINITION
The Sports Referee assists in the execution of Piedmont Recreation Department play by officiating league games. They work closely with the Youth and Adult Sports Coordinator, part-time staff, and players to ensure a respectful and fun league experience.
EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Illustrative Only)
- Arrive at games promptly for pre-game briefings and inspections.
- Review and clarify game rules with coaches and players before the game starts.
- Officiate youth sports games in accordance with established rules and regulations.
- Create a safe environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Enforce rules consistently and fairly, making quick and informed decisions during gameplay.
- Communicate effectively with players, coaches, and spectators regarding rules and decisions.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in officiating or playing the sport is preferred but not required.
- Certified official in applicable sport by local governing body.
- CPR / AED Certified.
OTHER DUTIES
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to improve officiating skills.
- Engage with the community to promote the importance of sportsmanship and youth participation in sports.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
- Reports to the Youth and Adult Sports Coordinator.
- Works collaboratively with other referees and game officials.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in a sports facility setting and use equipment. Strength and flexibility to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
May involve significant standing, walking, pushing, bending and / or pulling to participate in recreation activities. Visual acuity sufficient to perform essential functions of the position.
Hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. Maintained physical fitness to keep up with gameplay.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees work in a sports facility setting with loud to moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions. Employees may interact with challenging staff and / or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
Applicants should also exhibit patience, maturity, and dependability. Have good organizational skills. Possess a positive coaching philosophy, as well as excellent communication and organizational skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Schedule will vary between 10-20 hours per week. Games will typically be scheduled Saturday-Sunday in-between 9 : 00am-5 : 00pm (final practice and game schedule will be provided closer to season).
