JOB TITLE: Maintenance Worker
DEPARTMENT: Street, City of Pierre
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for operating street sweepers, snow plows, and other equipment to maintain city streets.
MAJOR DUTIES:
o Operates a street sweeper to clean streets and city parking lots.
o Loads trucks with sand or gravel and transports to work sites and/or landfill with front-end loader; smooths job sites with loader.
o Removes snow from streets and parking lots.
o Operates roller to seal city streets; fills water trucks at fire hydrants.
o Provides routine maintenance of equipment by performing such duties as checking oil and fluid levels.
o Patches potholes with asphalt.
o Operates sanding truck and backhoe as necessary.
o Performs janitorial duties and light housekeeping as necessary.
o Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
o Knowledge of city, department, and safety policies and procedures.
o Knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques.
o Skill in operating and maintaining equipment such as street sweeper, backhoe, truck, roller, snow plow, bobcat, and front-end loader.
o Skill in using various hand and power tools.
o Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Street Superintendent or Heavy Equipment Operator/Crew Leader assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The work is reviewed for accuracy, compliance with instructions and established procedures, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department and safety rules and regulations, work orders, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of street maintenance duties. Inclement weather and the need to work around traffic contribute to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to maintain city streets. Successful performance helps ensure safe streets and enhances the public image of the city.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers and the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to exchange information and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, and use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
o Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
o Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
o Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. A CDL is required for this position.
Qualifications
Must have possession of or ability to obtain a Class B CDL with air brakes and tanker endorsements.
