JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision provides for the safety of individuals using the City swimming facility; prevents accidents and injuries; rescues or assists swimmers in need of aid.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Six (6) months internship of volunteer work in recreational or school based programs; must possess Adult/Child/Infant CPR, First Aid and AED certification. Preference given to those with Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard certifications.
- Requires the ability to swim, dive, jump, balance, stand, bend, kneel, sit, stoop, climb, run, and lift up to 50 pounds; also requires the ability to see a 5” black circle on the bottom of pool in 10’ of water; able to hear a whistle, thunder, and cries for help; good oral and written communication skills.
- This position is assigned the status of Non-Emergency Essential Personnel for the purposes of work assigned before, during, and after a disaster-related event.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Educates the general public in water safety through explanation and enforcement of rules, regulations, and disciplinary measures; monitors swimmers for safety; rescues and/or assists swimmers in distress or danger; assists in pool and facility maintenance; monitors customers’ belongings; vacuums pool; cleans facility restrooms and public areas; completes/submits forms and reports accurately and on time; may act as lead lifeguard.
- May provide assistance to aquatic facility visitors by answering phones, assists in registration, filing, and data entry for the purpose of preparing attendance, cash, and other reports.

- Knowledge of water safety and lifeguard training.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws, ordinances, statutes, regulations, rules, policies and procedures.
- Skill in developing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships.

- Skill in utilizing emergency rescue and resuscitation.
- Skill in maintaining a safe pool environment.
- Skill in the daily maintenance of the City swimming pool.

- Skill in operating various office equipment.
- Skill in written communications for documentation and record maintenance.
- Skill in responding to inquiries and complaints from the public.
- Skill in remaining calm and patient under stress.

- Ability to provide leadership and assume responsibility for achievement of desired outcomes.
