Salary:  $30.14 per hour. 

Union: This position is included in the Pittsburgh Joint Collective Bargaining Committee and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Union Bid Form: Not required. Your application for this position will serve as your union Bid Form.

  • A current, valid Commercial Class B driver’s license with the “L” airbrake restriction lifted is required at the time of submitting application and must be maintained throughout employment. Your driver's license will be verified prior to appointment to the position.

Qualifying Requirements: 

Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed, and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position.  You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status. 


  • WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show two (2) years of experience operating various types of heavy equipment (i.e., rubber and track high lifts/loaders, bulldozers, rubber and track pavers, rollers, graders, backhoes, gradalls, skidsteers, excavators, cranes (rated 10 tons and over), and other types of related equipment (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.) 

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: None required for this position. 

  • EQUIVALENCY:  Work experience may be substituted if the application clearly shows successful completion of a Pre-Apprentice Heavy Equipment Operator Program (or equivalent) from an accredited institution.

  • Performance:  Based on the knowledge/abilities listed in the Position Description section of this announcement.  Examinations will be scheduled as needed.  
  • Medical:  Required.

  • Operates various types of heavy equipment (i.e., rubber and track high lifts/loaders, bulldozers, rubber and track pavers, rollers, graders, backhoes, gradalls, skidsteers, excavators, cranes (rated 10 tons and over), and other types of related equipment. 
  • Assists in construction and maintenance of City property, providing such tasks as excavating and backfilling for landslides, street failures, road construction, road repair, plowing snow, sewer construction, bridge inspection, playgrounds, ball fields, park features, etc.
  • Services, maintains, and makes minor repairs to equipment; may be required to assist in performing major repairs.
  • Ensures that appropriate safety procedures are observed in the operation of, repair of and vicinity of equipment.
  • Safely loads and unloads materials from City vehicles.
  • Drives City vehicle as required.
  • Uses a variety of technological hardware (ie, computers, laptops, tablets, smart phones, GPS, cameras, etc.) and/or software (ie, email, Cartegraph, Microsoft Office, etc.) to maintain records and prepare accurate reports on work performed.
  • Performs activities and functions of related lower-level personnel as assigned or required.
  • Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
  • May work all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
