Job Description Summary
SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs various maintenance and repair activities of the City’s streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Repairs pot holes, overlays and other street areas with cold mix; performs street cuts with milling machines and street rollers.
- Replaces concrete curbs, gutters and sidewalks due to ruptured water lines.
- Hauls sweepings from the Street Sweeper to the City landfill.
- Performs snow and ice control; applies sand to streets during icy conditions.
- Performs traffic control; erects barricades, cones and barrels for special events.
- Performs minor preventive maintenance and the proper care of equipment.
- Cleans drains and ditches.
- Hangs Christmas lights and a Christmas tree for City decorations.
- Serves on-call for stated periods; installs portable stop signs; removes debris from streets.
- May participate in road striping.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Plainview and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Knowledge:
- City policies and procedures.
- Principles and practices of road construction and street maintenance and repair.
- Traffic control methods.
- Concrete repair methods and practices.
- Snow and ice removal methods and practices.
- Customer service principles and practices.
Skills:
- Analyzing problems and developing effective solutions.
- Using power and hand tools.
- Motorized maintenance equipment operation.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other City staff and the general public.
- Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or equivalent; AND two years of experience in street maintenance and repair operations; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
- Possession of a valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
- May require possession of a Texas Pesticide Applicator license.
