Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journey-level classification in the Construction Inspector series that follows diversified procedures and implements processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request. This class is distinguished from Construction Inspector, Senior in that the latter is a higher-level class in the series that performs more complex technical, investigative, and supervisory duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.
Examples Of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of: Public Works and Utilities construction or construction of water pump stations and elevated water storage tanks; geotechnical quality control instruments; civil construction methods and standards; construction health and safety standards and procedures.
Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; reading and interpreting engineering plans; working with little or no direct supervision.
Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience in the inspection of construction projects, including field surveying.
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class C driver's license (must obtain within 30 days of hire per state law); certification as a Construction Inspector is desirable.
Senior Construction Inspector
Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the advanced journey-level classification in the Construction Inspection series. The incumbent plans detailed methods to attain desired objectives working within established policy. Methods require use of initiatives and resourcefulness in developing processes and procedures. Works under indirect supervision, conferring with supervisor on unusual matters.
Examples Of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Knowledge of: Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances related to easements and rights-of-way; Civil Engineering construction principles and methods; geotechnical quality control instruments.
Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; using surveying level and other measuring and test equipment; working outside during adverse weather conditions; reading and interpreting Civil Engineering construction plans.
Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience inspecting construction/maintenance contracts, including some experience in supervising maintenance personnel.
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class C driver’s license (must obtain within 30 days of hire per state law).

The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking conducting inspections to identify problems or hazards . Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator, to operate standard office equipment, to turn faucets on and off, manipulate door knobs, conduct tests and to operate tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information, obtain samples, and set up equipment. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 35 pounds .
Employees partly work in the office and partly in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

By Becoming a Construction Inspector, You Will:
- Be the boots on the ground, conducting on-site inspections of construction projects, water mains, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, and the city-maintained infrastructure, including streets, alleys, and drainage channels.
- Don your detective hat as you investigate and respond to complaints related to easements, streets, alleys, right-of-ways, and construction activities. Collaborate with contractors and other departments to coordinate project activities.
- Dive into the community by inspecting privately maintained sites, meeting with Homeowner's Associations, and engaging with residents on easement issues. Your expertise will help resolve complaints and identify maintenance responsibilities.
- Keep the adventure alive by maintaining accurate asset records and a daily log of your assigned projects, ensuring nothing goes unnoticed.

- Coordinates the activities of contractor and other departments/divisions and outside organizations relating to the maintenance of drainage easements, street and alley rights-of-way and construction activities.
- Maintains fixed asset records for Street, Traffic and Drainage divisions.
- Collects data and maintains inventories of city infrastructure and prepares quantity reports on infrastructure rehabilitation; input inventory data into the city G.I.S. Program.
- Assists in the coordination and conduct of on-site field inspections of construction/ public works projects to ensure compliance with contract requirements.
- Reviews construction plans and job specifications to ensure compliance by contractors.
- Maintains records and files on status of assigned projects.
- Investigates complaints related to assigned projects and take appropriate action.
- Directs inspectors in interpretation of plans and conduct field inspections of projects with assigned inspectors.
- Trains and instructs new inspectors.
- Coordinates projects with other departments and agencies.
