ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
The eligibility requirements for Plano Police Recruits are established by the City of Plano Fire Fighters’ and Police Officers’ Civil Service Commission. The following represent part of these requirements. Applicants must:
- Be at least 21 years of age at the date of hire.
- Be a United States citizen.
Those applying for a beginning position in the Police Department one :
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university at the time of their start date with the department OR
- 60 semester hours credit from an accredited college or university at the time of their start date with the department AND
- at least 3 years prior Active Duty military service, OR
60 semester hours credit from an accredited college or university at the time of their start date with the department AND 2 years full-time, paid sworn law enforcement experience, OR
- Possess at least three (3) years of full-time service to the Plano Police Department in the positions(s) of Public Safety Officer, Public Safety Officer Supervisor, Detention Officer or Detention Officer Supervisor shall have in lieu of a baccalaureate degree, a minimum of sixty (60) semester hours credit from a college or university accredited by the United States Department or Education or Council for Higher Education Accreditation at the time of their start date with the Police Department.
Must also meet the following requirements:
- Be able to perform the essential duties of a Police Officer.
- Meet all legal requirements necessary for future licensing and certification as required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
Applicants who are now discharged but have a minimum of 180 consecutive days on Active Duty in the Armed Forces of the United States may be eligible to receive five (5) additional points if:
- Applicant received a passing score of 70;
- Applicant received an “Honorable” discharge (General discharges under honorable conditions, etc. are not eligible);
- Applicant submitted a , undeleted ( sections 23-30) prior to the completion of the exam.

The eligibility list shall be in effect for 6 months from the date of examination, unless exhausted earlier.
