Description
This is a non-exempt position, which is responsible routine work involving planning and implementing a recreational program for the City. An employee in this classification is responsible for supervising a group of children, planning activities such as games, sports, arts and crafts, special events and general activities. This position requires some initiative and independent judgment in accomplishing assignments.
Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
Examples of Duties
Organizes, supervises and participates in games, sports, individual and group activities, arts and crafts, theme weeks, special events, field trips, 4th of July program, etc.
Displays leadership ability in planning and directing recreational activities.
Plans and implements assigned special events, sporting events, etc.
Issues, maintains and organizes recreational equipment.
Completes attendance, accident and incident reports, as required.
Maintains discipline and encourages compliance with safety rules and regulations.
Prepares area for special events, arts and crafts coordinator.
Performs routine janitorial duties at campsites.
This position does not have final procurement authority.
Performs related work as required and as directed.
Typical Qualifications
Working knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in summer recreation programs.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including holidays.
Ability to substitute for absent Recreation Counselors.
Ability to operate various audio / visual equipment such as DVD players, televisions and stereo systems.
Ability to assist with any special events or guests.
Ability to coordinate with Recreation Counselors weekly special events.
Provide all information signs needed by the campsite.
Knowledge of effective supervisory methods and techniques.
Ability to maintain discipline and encourage compliance with safety rules and regulations.
Ability to provide instructions to participants engaged in arts and crafts, group games and sports.
Ability to work a flexible work schedule to accommodate the camp's needs and assist in special events during the summer program.
Ability to maintain records and compile reports.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments correctly.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and the general public.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a G.E.D. certificate from a recognized issuing agency, supplemented by experience in childcare.

Incumbents in this job class are required to undergo a Level 2 Background Screening as required by the State of Florida. The screening includes a photograph, fingerprint-based searches of criminal records nationally, and is performed using the electronic LiveScan process.

Probationary Period
All new employees serve a one (1) year probationary period from date of hire.
Pay Check
Pay checks are issued bi-weekly every other Friday; direct deposit of paycheck required to any banking institution is mandatory.
Part-time and Will Call employees are generally not eligible for City of Plantation benefits unless otherwise required by law.
