Description
This is a non-exempt position which requires unskilled and semi-skilled manual work in the performance of light and heavy manual labor for conducting various maintenance duties for various municipal departments of the City of Plantation.
Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
Examples of Duties
Sprays foliage, lawns and sport fields for weed and pest control.
Installs trees and shrubbery to maintain landscaping throughout the city.
Trims and fertilizes trees, shrubbery, lawns and sport fields as needed.
Provides general care to lawns and grounds and removes dirt, rubbish, weeds, leaves and other refuse from grounds.
Prunes trees to eliminate hazards and preserve the beauty of the trees on municipal streets and property.
Cleans culverts, ditches, swales, canals, and build retaining walls.
Mixes concrete and replaces and repairs sidewalks throughout the city.
?Digs, grades, and sets forms for concrete work and tamps and levels concrete.
Installs new and old road signs, erects barricades, and repairs breaks and holes in street surfaces.
Cleans and cares for public buildings and other municipal property, including sweeping, moping, scrubbing floors, and washing windows and walls.
Takes down, moves, and erects benches, seats, and chairs or equipment as needed.?
Lines playing fields, drags, waters, weeds and maintains landscaped areas of sports fields.
Repairs and maintains playground equipment in order to retain proper operating condition.
Perform semi-skilled carpentry, masonry, painting, plumbing and landscaping tasks and general maintenance of municipal buildings, equipment and property and works as a helper to a skilled trades worker as needed or requested.
Assists mechanics at city garage in making a variety of repairs to automotive and mechanical equipment.
Performs miscellaneous pick-ups and deliveries of errands as required.
Exercises care and safety in use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks and knowledge of safety rules and regulations prescribed by the city.
Performs related work as required and as directed.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of tree trimming methods and relevant safety precautions.
Knowledge of cleaning methods and skilled in the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.
Knowledge of methods and tools used in cement finishing as position requires.
Knowledge of principles and fundamentals of horticultural and plant nurseries.
Knowledge of landscape maintenance and new installation experience.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of the proper use of safety practices.
Skill in written and verbal communication.
Skill in the use of common hand tools and mechanical equipment.
Ability to perform general care to lawns and grounds.
Ability to operate assigned equipment safely and effectively.
Ability to plant and fertilize trees, shrubbery, and lawns.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and evenings, as required.
Ability to paint and install playground equipment and fences and maintain and install irrigation systems as position requires.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under hot and humid conditions.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments correctly.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with city officials, other city departments, fellow employees, supervisors, outside agencies, and the general public.
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by a minimum of 6 months of experience in ground, street, and/or landscape maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Work Environment
The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires the ability to balance, climb, crawl, crouch, lift and/or carry and push/pull various objects.
