What are the responsibilities and job description for the MECHANIC I - FIRE DEPARTMENT position at City of Plantation?
This is a non-exempt position, which is specialized mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of small engines and small equipment used in the Fire Department.
Work includes both gasoline and diesel fueled apparatus. Employees work under general supervision, using independent judgment concerning the method of repair. Receives work orders setting forth a complaint with respect to the operating condition of a piece of equipment. A supervisor may test results during work or after completion.
Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
Diagnoses defects, makes repairs and performs minor and major work on a wide variety of small engines and any small equipment including, but not limited to, generators, pumps, chain saws, 2 cycle, 4 cycle and small diesel engines.
Performs preventative maintenance on various small engines.
Maintains simple records of work performed.
This position does not have final procurement authority.
Performs related work as required and as directed.Knowledge of the method, materials, tools and standard practices of the small engine mechanic trade.
Knowledge of the tools used in maintenance and repair of small engines.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of proper use of safety practices.
Knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel fueled internal combustion engines.
Ability to operate assigned equipment safely.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments correctly.
Ability to adhere to tight schedules and still maintain work quality.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other City employees.
Ability to supply own working tools.
Ability to operate City Fire Department vehicles and possess the required license.
Skill in the use of the tools, machines and testing instruments of the trade.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from a standard high school, or vocational school, and experience in the repair and maintenance of small engines; welding experience desirable; or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.
This is a designated "Response" classification in the City's Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies. Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
