What are the responsibilities and job description for the MECHANIC III - FIRE DEPARTMENT position at City of Plantation?
This is a non-exempt position, which is specialized skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, trucks, emergency extraction tools, two and four-cycle engines, high pressure hydraulic equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus and a wide variety of other Fire Department equipment and fire apparatus.
The employee in this classification is responsible for performing journeyman level mechanical work of average difficulty. Under general supervision, the employee is required to exercise initiative and independent judgment in determining method of repair, following receipt of work orders. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate personnel in the mechanical field.
Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause. Performs diagnostic tests, repairs, major overhaul and preventative maintenance of automobiles, trucks, and a wide variety of Fire Department equipment and fire apparatus assigned to the Fire Department; both heavy and light.
Performs preventative maintenance on firefighting equipment and City vehicles assigned to the Fire Department.
Conducts regular inspections of the motorized equipment of the Fire Department.
Maintains records of work performed, inspections and inventory records.
Responsible for the maintenance, repair and replacement of a variety of firefighters equipment; including, but not limited to, acetylene torches, fire extinguishers, ladders and life nets.
Designs, fabricates parts and components to repair and rebuild all types of fire pumps, floating, portable, fire trucks, as required by the State of Florida in the National Fire Protection Association Pamphlet #1901.
Designs, fabricates parts and components to repair and rebuild all types of specialty equipment, nozzles, fire department tools, reels, air compressors and generators.
Assists in securing prices and quotations for all parts, plus a controlled inventory of the items for the repairing of all fire department equipment.
This position does not have final procurement authority.
Performs related work as required and as directed.
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive, truck, and fire apparatus trade.
Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommendations on fire apparatus construction and repair.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
A working knowledge of the operating and repair components of a wide variety of Fire Department equipment and related machinery.
Knowledge of the principles and operations of gasoline and diesel fueled internal combustion engines.
Ability to diagnose troubles in all Fire Department apparatus and other related equipment or vehicles.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments correctly.
Ability to adhere to tight schedules and still maintain work quality.
Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with departmental officials, other employees and the general public.
Ability to operate City vehicles and possess the required license.
Education and Experience:
Journeyman level experience in the field of automotive mechanics, diesel and fire apparatus, or graduation from an approved course in the trade; completion of a standard high school or vocational school; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Required: Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification
- Preferred: Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification
