What are the responsibilities and job description for the UTILITIES PLANT MECHANIC I - CLASS C position at City of Plantation?
This is a non-exempt position, which is manual skilled work in the care and maintenance of water and wastewater plants, lift stations and other aspects pertaining to a water and wastewater utilities system. The work involves the operation of heavy equipment and tools which are needed to make repairs to water and wastewater plants. Work is usually performed under the direction of a higher classification; however, constant supervision is not necessary for familiar tasks which can be performed without difficulty. Position requires being in an on-call rotation and employee is subject to call outs at any time, performing after-hours operational response.
This entry-level position will perform operations related to corrective and preventive mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, and assist in repair on plant equipment and systems. Equipment operated and maintained includes, but is not limited to, large rotating equipment generators, motors, overhead hoists and cranes, compressors and pneumatic systems, hydraulic power units, domestic water systems, and other associated pump plant mechanical equipment. Will work on and around underground substructures, pipelines, etc.
Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
Performs general and preventive maintenance work, repair, and general construction on water and wastewater plants, lift stations, distribution system, etc.
May operate heavy equipment including but not limited to man lifts, forklifts, overhead crane lifting operations and inspections.
Lubrication of small and large diameter valves, actuators and bearings; rebuilding various pumps and valves; repairing and installing piping; repairing water system equipment failures.
Maintenance of manually, hydraulically, and electrically operated regulating valves, slide gates, various sizes and types of pumps, stationary and mobile overhead hoists and cranes, compressors and pneumatic systems, hydraulic power units, domestic water systems, and plant mechanical equipment.
Assists in rebuilding, replacing, and installing pumps; refurbishing and/or rebuilding valves and associated piping.
May perform stand-by duties and after-hours emergency response.
May remove and install large diameter pipeline fitting including but not limited to flanged and MJ.
May perform plant inspections, safety-related inspections and maintenance and overhead crane lifting operations and inspections.
This position does not have final procurement authority.
Performs other related work as required.Ability to troubleshoot and repair chemical metering pumps.
Knowledge of maintenance and repair procedures for water and wastewater utilities system.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of proper use of safety procedures.
Knowledge of greasing and maintenance on equipment.
Knowledge of soldering pipes, pipefitting and use of gas cutting torches.
Knowledge of proper repair of PVC piping.
Knowledge of proper use of all hand tools and safety equipment;
Ability to work safely.
Ability to operate equipment in general plant and system maintenance.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments correctly.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under hot and humid conditions.
Ability to operate a City vehicle and acquire a commercial driver's license (CDL) within six (6) months of employment in position.
Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including call outs.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
The specified skills required for this position are one year's entry-level experience in operations, preventive, and corrective maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and systems associated with water and wastewater treatment, conveyance and distribution systems. Some plumbing experience required.
MIG, TIG, & ARC welding experience desired.
Sheet Metal and pipe fabrication experience desired.
Any equivalent documented combination of education, experience and training may be considered.
The job involves frequent heavy lifting often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces under hot and humid conditions.This is a designated "Response" classification in the City's Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies. Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
