Are you ready to take the lead as a hands on manager of a growing department as the City undertakes some major infrastructure improvements? We’re looking for a leader who is capable of handling the day to day work challenges of Public Works and is passionate about public service and has a desire to serve the community. Our organizational structure ensures that you will work collaboratively across the entire City’s operations, getting to know employees personally and getting to see the daily impact of your work. This position will oversee 7 staff members leading critical functions such as water distribution, sewer collection, roadway maintenance, stormwater, and inspecting private development improvements. This position reports directly to the Public Works Director and will oversee all other public works staff.
The City has made major investments into the operations and maintenance of the City’s Public Works Department and infrastructure. We are expanding and growing the department through new equipment, upgraded equipment and vehicles, and new staff members. The City has authorized infrastructure replacements and voters recently authorized another $10M for improvements. Key Responsibilities:

Task Management: Outline, oversee, and manage daily activities of staff, working alongside them to accomplish work tasks, including troubleshooting when needed. This job will be hands-on and requires on the job assistance, coaching, and development.
Personnel Management: Play a pivotal role in shaping the team by initiative and recommending employment actions including hiring, termination, discipline, and promotions.

Summary:
Under general direction from the Public Works Director, plans, schedules, assigns, and reviews the work of public works staff within the Public Works department; supervises, plans, and coordinates the construction, installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of City infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, water, sewer, stormwater and/or drainage systems and facilities; administers, monitors, and provides technical input for assigned public works maintenance, operations, and related projects and programs; performs a variety of technical tasks relative to the assigned functional area; and performs related work in the field as required.
Qualifications:
- Principles and practices of employee supervision, including work planning, assignment review and evaluation, discipline, and the training of staff in work procedures.
- Principles and practices of leadership.
- Principles and practices of public works maintenance and operations program development and administration.
- Principles, practices, equipment, tools, and materials of construction, maintenance, and repair of public works infrastructure.
- Principles and practices of contract administration and evaluation.
- Safety principles, practices, procedures, and equipment related to the work.
- The operation and maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and power equipment.
- Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
- Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination.
- Knowledge of general software programs to conduct, compile, and/or generate documentation.
Working Environment:
Work is performed primarily in a field setting and the worker is subject to all environmental conditions.
Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school and five (5) years of progressively responsible work experience performing construction and maintenance work, including two (2) years of lead experience or equivalent, and the knowledge to operate power-driven equipment. An associate or bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related field is preferable.
Salary and Benefits:
The starting salary for this position is $60,611 - $75,005, depending on the applicant's qualifications.
