The Fire Inspector / Firefighter is responsible for protecting life and property from the hazards of fire and other emergencies; respond to emergency calls and provide efficient and immediate care to the ill and injured.
Primary Assignment : Fire Inspector
Interpret, apply and enforce fire and life safety codes; conduct inspections of new and existing buildings for compliance with the fire code and local fire safety ordinances to minimize loss of life and property.
Essential Functions

Perform corrective and permit based inspections
Schedule and perform periodic fire code and life safety inspections in educational facilities, institutional facilities, business facilities, and multi-housing complexes using the Minnesota State Fire Code, City of Plymouth ordinances and policies.Perform inspection and testing on all fire related permits, fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, and all other fire suppression systems for proper installation and function.Determine code violations; review with owner / manager and issue correction orders on inspection form or by letter; document all inspections.Communicate other code violations found during inspections to proper agencies.Assist shift personnel with company inspection follow-up as needed.Inspect the installation and / or removal of tanks, tents, and firework retail areas.Perform follow-up inspections to ensure compliance.Perform fire permit plan review
Perform plan review for new buildings, remodels, or additions to ensure that the proposed design conforms to applicable codes, laws, rules, and regulations.Remain familiar with new materials, equipment, methods of construction, and changes in the code, to ensure that fire codes are administered in a fair and effective manner.Research, interpret, and evaluate fire code regulations, city ordinances, and consult with architects, engineers and property owners regarding their applications and code compliance.Work cooperatively to ensure safe community development while using common sense and authoritative latitude.Ensure that necessary records are accurately kept and submitted.
Maintain complete and accurate records of all code enforcement activities using the fire department record management system.Work in cooperation with all other city departments and inspectors on code enforcement activities.
Investigate complaints regarding code violations and answer code related questions.
Develop, modify, implement, evaluate, and prioritize education on code enforcement and target hazards for department personnel.
Respond to emergency medical calls to provide efficient and immediate care to the ill and injured.
Determine nature and extent of injury or illness and establishes priority for appropriate emergency care.Assist in the removal of persons from life threatening situations. Utilize manual and powered rescue equipment to extricate persons trapped. Utilize the prescribed techniques and appliances for removing the victims safely.Respond to fire alarms and other emergency calls, extinguish or controls fires, or other hazards as a member of a team, under the supervision of a superior officer within the Fire Department's chain of command.
Select, drag, lift and carry hose and nozzle depending on type and size of fire, and applies a stream of water or chemicals onto fire.Position, raise and climb ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings or to rescue individuals from burning structures and emergency situations.Create openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance, using an ax, sledge hammer, crowbar, power saw, or power equipment.Protect property from water and smoke by use of positive or negative pressure ventilation, waterproof salvage covers and property removal.Administer emergency medical care to injured persons and those overcome by fire and smoke.Communicate during emergencies in a calm, descriptive and articulate manner.In emergency situations, work may involve considerable personal danger.Responds to emergency call backs when off-duty.Works standby or assigned events as required.Maintain fire apparatus, equipment, stations, and grounds as part of a team, following department procedures.
Inspect, maintain and repair, as necessary, all firefighting and safety equipment.Conduct tests on equipment as required.Complete proper check lists, maintain appropriate maintenance records and report damaged or improperly functioning equipment.Attend regular and assigned training sessions to maintain and upgrade firefighting skills.
Participate in drills, demonstration and course in hydraulics, pump operation and maintenance, emergency medical procedures, fire prevention, rescue techniques, and firefighting techniques.Perform as driver / operator of fire apparatus.
Drive and operate fire fighting vehicles and equipment in a safe and proper manner following department procedures and regulations.Maintain vehicle and equipment in safe operational condition according to department procedures.Provide a variety of public safety, community, municipal services and miscellaneous tasks to ensure the effective and prompt delivery of services. These services and tasks may include follow up on nuisance complaints, animal control, control of recovered property, and enforcement of various ordinances.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as needed, apparent, or assigned in accordance with Fire Department Standard Operating Procedures.
Works under the direction of superior officer responsible for the assigned shift
