What are the responsibilities and job description for the Probationary Firefighter position at City of Pocatello, ID?
The Probationary Firefighter responds to fire, medical and other emergency calls and incidents in the City of Pocatello and Bannock County. This is an entry-level position with the Pocatello Fire Department and is assigned to a platoon within a fire station.
The Probationary Firefighter responds to and extinguishes structure, wildland, vehicle, and wildland urban interface fires by using suppression and extinguishing agents such as water foam and chemicals; maintains knowledge of fire suppression and life saving procedures; maintains physical fitness to ensure a high level of stamina and endurance; provides emergency medical assistance to the injured and sick through the use of EMT skills; prepares detailed reports and maintains records on incidents; trains and assists in training other firefighters; helps conduct pre-plans and prevention activities; assists in vehicle maintenance; assists in public education; obtains EMT license; and maintains fire station and grounds.
The difference between a Firefighter I and a Probationary Firefighter is that the Probationary Firefighter is an entry-level position and receives intensive training (in person and on-line) during his/her first year of employment to meet Firefighter I certification, obtain a State of Idaho EMT Basic license, and work toward obtaining certifications for Haz-mat, Trench Rescue and Extrication.
This job requires knowledge and proficiency in fire suppression, knowledge of fire behavior, apparatus maintenance and operation, driving and pumping apparatus, operation of water hydraulic and fire flow calculations, emergency response guidelines, standard operating procedures, incident command structure, radio and face to face communication, wildland firefighting, airport rescue firefighting, leadership skills, familiarity of city streets and districts, conflict resolution methods, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
