The City of Pomona invites you to start your career as a Technical Specialist I - Music Program Instructor in our Community Services Department!

We are seeking candidates with skills in :

  • Music Instructor - Percussionist
  • Music Instructor - Bassist / Guitarist
  • Music Instructor - Pianist

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY

    A combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be :

    Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency required. Some technical training or college-level coursework in music theory or music education is desired.
  • One year of experience in the field of music instruction in one or more of the designated focus areas.

    One year of experience playing in a band, orchestra or ensembles.

    Desired : One year of paid or volunteer experience working directly with youth in any capacity.

    License or Certificates

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Class "C" driver's license and have a good driving record.
  • Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment : Ability to work in a standard office / classroom environment; ability to travel to different sites and locations; ability to lift up to 30 pounds.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Teach and implement weekly music classes and summer music camps.
  • Develop and deliver formal and informal music lessons appropriate to participants' age and skill levels.

    Prepare, set up, and clean up after each lesson, rehearsal, or performance.

    Attend and support all orchestra rehearsals and performances.

    Substitute or support other music classes as needed.

    Ensure class attendance records are completed properly and regularly.

    Utilize classroom management skills to maintain a safe and orderly environment.

    Act as a resource in curriculum development, participant recruitment, retention, and programmatic assessment.

    Conduct and / or attend regular meetings and training sessions related to music program development and implementation.

    Meet deadlines while maintaining high quality of work.

    Follow established emergency and safety procedures at all times.

    Accurately document and communicate all incidents / accidents as appropriate.

    Communicate effectively with participants, City officials, parents / guardians, community members, co-workers, volunteers, and guests.

    Maintain a professional demeanor to uphold the City's image and mission statement.

    Demonstrate competency in bass / guitar playing, percussion instruments, piano, and / or choral music or instrumental music.

    Implement best practices in risk management related to music programs and recreation facilities.

    Assess and perform minor repairs and adjustments of music instruments.

    Operate modern office equipment and Microsoft software, particularly Word and Excel.

    Manage multiple skill levels of participants simultaneously.

    Work independently and strategically while exercising patience and professionalism.

    Establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and the public.

    SELECTION PROCESS

    Work Hours

    Work hours will be approximately 10-20 hours per week. Most of our normal working hours will be in the afternoon / evening time. During summer, work hours may include morning / afternoon time. Some weekends may be required.

    Examination Procedure

    Screening of qualifications and "most qualified" is based on the information provided on the official City Application. The examination process for this position may consist of a qualifications review, a supplemental background questionnaire, skill demonstration and an oral interview weighing 100% of the applicant's final score. The Human Resources Department may waive any part of the examination depending upon the number of applicants. This recruitment will also establish a list for future vacancies.
