Manual work of a skilled nature involving the operation of specialized athletic field maintenance equipment to eliminate weeds, insects, and disease. Applies pesticides and fertilizers to athletic fields, municipal parks, ROW, the City Cemetery and other public grounds.
Assists with the maintenance, repair and preparation of parks/athletic fields and related facilities or in the performance of specialized field applications and special events. Instructs and demonstrates proper operation and use of tools and equipment used in athletic field maintenance; does related work as required.
Coordinates the use of equipment, materials, and personnel to obtain maximum effectiveness; Responsible for cleaning and preventative maintenance on equipment; Work is performed under general supervision, performs related tasks as required
Typical Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years' experience in chemical applications to turf grasses utilizing a high and/or low volume spray vehicle, preferably supplemented by educational courses in pest control practices and procedures. Must possess an Ornamental and Turf Pest Control License at the time of application, and be willing to continue educational courses in chemical application. A valid Florida Class "B" CDL preferred or must be obtained within one (1) year of hire. A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Knowledge of the practices and procedures involved in the pest control operation. Knowledge of pesticides, herbicides and insecticides and their application. Knowledge of the operation and repair of spray equipment. Ability to recognize various vegetation problems and to correct these problems. Must have the ability to read and understand a pesticide label to properly mix and use pesticides in a safe manner. Position occasionally requires work after normal duty hours and/or on weekends. Must be willing to adjust work hours to meet schedule demands. Labor intensive position includes walking, pushing, pulling, lifting and kneeling. Use of hand tools involves grasping. Ability to frequently move up to 50 lbs. and occasionally move up to 80 lbs. Specific abilities include seeing, hearing, talking, and ability to follow oral instructions. Must work outside in all weather conditions.
