This position works under the general supervision of a Lift Station Operator II, inspecting and repairing 81 wastewater lift stations. Keeps detailed records and submits electronic and paper reports. Performs manual and semi-skilled work in a safe manner, requiring knowledge of specialized facets of underground utility maintenance or construction work as well as related work such as electrical, SCADA troubleshooting, wet well cleaning, pump and motor inspection, including the operation and maintenance of wastewater transmission mains. Operates various vehicles, cranes, motorized maintenance, and construction equipment. This Lean Six Sigma Utility continually strives to improve efficiency and work quality. This is an essential position; incumbent will be required to rotate "call duty" with an assigned operator II, and work extended hours during and after rain events, hurricanes or natural disasters and utility emergencies. Works proactively and provides excellent customer service to internal and external customers. Follows all safety procedures and promotes a safe work environment. A strong understanding of ethical behavior is required. Needs to have an intellectual curiosity and desire to find answers. As part of the Utilities Team, performs related duties as required following all safety and regulatory requirements.
High school diploma or equivalent required, college course work a plus. Preference will be given to those with experience in various fields of utility maintenance. Must possess a FL Class “C” certificate from FWPCOA in Wastewater Collection (or obtain within one year of hire) and a FL Class “B” CDL driver’s license with air brakes and tanker endorsements at the time of application. Desired knowledge includes O.S.H.A. confined space training, experience operating motorized construction equipment, machine-shop equipment, electrical/electronics repairs, operating/maintaining wastewater pumping equipment, and radio telemetry (Dataflow SCADA system). Must be open to continual development by the successful completion of courses offered, such as safety, college, and technical training programs. Must be able to operate computers; hands-on testing of computer skills will be conducted. Testing will be conducted on GIS and paper reading as part of the interview process. Ability to work at moderate heights, as well as wet and dry wells of lift stations. The position requires regular work in confined spaces and the ability to use a safety harness. The noise level is moderate to high. Work environment: chemical fumes, dust, machinery hazards, and adverse outdoor weather conditions. Incumbents are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as harnesses, hardhats, hearing protection, respirators, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), as work place conditions mandate. Must be physically capable of using respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus; must pass a pulmonary function test. Applicants must not have facial hair that is in the area of the face seal of respiratory PPE. Physical abilities include walking, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, reaching, and climbing. Ability to perform moderate moving up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis and occasionally move up to 75 lbs. The use of hand tools involves grasping. Candidates must possess effective communication skills and the ability to speak, write, and understand English. Applicant must possess the ability to follow complex oral and written instructions. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
