Job Summary

The Small Engine Mechanic performs skilled repair, diagnoses, and maintenance to primarily small engines used to power lawn mowers, pumps, trimmers, chain saws, blowers, and related equipment (most two and four-cycle equipment).

Supervision Exercised And Received

Receives immediate supervision from the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES - Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Inspect, diagnose and locate mechanical difficulties on small engines used to power lawn mowers, pumps, trimmers, chain saws, blowers, and related equipment to determine extent of necessary repairs, using diagnostic instruments if necessary.
  • Repair and maintain gasoline and diesel engines on equipment such as lawn mowers, pumps, trimmers, chain saws, blowers, and related 2 or 4 cycle equipment.
  • Overhaul, repair and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials and clutches; tune up engines; replace ignition parts; clean and adjust carburetors.
  • Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, fan belts, brake shoes and pads and related parts and equipment; prepare and replace such components as generators, distributors, relays, lights and switches.
  • Responsible for complete and thorough documentation of diagnostics and repairs performed on work orders and on time submittal of information.
  • Participate in a variety of activities involving travel within city limits, which may include repairing equipment in field operation.
  • Order and maintain mechanical parts and supplies and other related materials.
  • Performs preventive maintenance to equipment such as lubrication, oil changes, air filters, honing cylinders, tuning ignition systems, etc.
  • Establishes and maintains a scheduled maintenance program for equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintains a clean work area and performs work in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Performs welding and fabrication work for vehicles and equipment.
  • May be required to work overtime and/or different shifts when circumstances warrant as determined by the supervisor.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Vehicle and equipment maintenance practices and procedures.

Operation and care of internal combustion engines.

Various equipment types and repair methods.

Basic principles, practices and techniques of equipment inspection.

Safety rules and regulations in performing work assignments..

Ability To

Operate a variety of tools, equipment and machinery including pressure washers, buffers, scrapers, grinders, drill presses, hydraulic gauges and hose machines, jacks, overhead cranes, torches, air jacks and drills, wrenches, screwdrivers, ratchets, testing machinery, band, chain and porta band saws, air compressors and other related materials used to repair mechanical equipment.

Inspect, repair and replace parts and materials related to mechanical equipment.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Maintain Effective Audio-visual Discrimination And Perception Needed For

  • evaluating equipment and vehicle malfunctions
  • operating assigned equipment
  • communicating with others.

Maintain Mental Capacity Which Allows The Capability Of

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:

  • walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time
  • lifting, moving and operating heavy equipment and materials
  • stooping, bending or crawling in order to make repairs
  • repairing, inspecting and replacing vehicle parts and materials
  • operating assigned equipment.

Effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to:

  • hazardous chemicals and materials
  • heat, fumes and smoke
  • electrical hazards
  • explosive materials including overinflated tires
  • confined work places
  • extremely loud noises.

Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Experience

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES - Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • One year of experience performing routine equipment maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to operate a forklift safely and proficiently
  • Considerable knowledge in equipment maintenance and repair gained through formal training or on the job experience in the repair of 2 and 4 cycle equipment.
  • Experience performing repairs and maintenance using special tools and equipment following technical manual procedures on machines of the technician’s specialty.
  • Experience working cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Experience communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must have an adequate toolset to perform job responsibilities.
  • Experience repairing small engines: zero turn mowers, tractors, chain saws, weed eaters, trenchers, lifts, engine repair on generators and air compressors (most two and four-cycle equipment), push and self-propelled lawn mowers both residential and commercial, lawn and garden tractors, chainsaws, trimmers both string and hedge, compact diesel tractors, handheld and backpack blowers, electric outdoor power equipment, sprayers, general outdoor power related equipment.

Minimum Training

Must have completed the twelfth grade and possess a high school diploma, or GED.

License

Possession of an appropriate Texas Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire is required.

Career Development: Employee is required to stay abreast of training requirements to provide the most up-to-date methods in completing work assignments.
