What are the responsibilities and job description for the Equipment Operator position at CITY OF PORT ORANGE?
POSITION OBJECTIVES
Operates a variety of heavy construction equipment to include a boom crane mounted on a truck chassis to lift and move materials and objects and a boom mounted tractor mower. Duties include the performance of manual laboring tasks. Performs the following duties under general direction.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Operates one or more of the following pieces of equipment and/or machines: Dozer, front-end loader, motor grader and maintainer, bucket truck, dragline, backhoe, scraper, pavers. Fastens attachments, such as movers and graders to tractor with hitchpins.
- Releases brake, shifts gears, and depresses accelerator or moves throttle to control forward and backward movement of equipment.
- Steers equipment by turning steering wheel and depressing brake pedals.
- Lubricates and repairs equipment and attachments, performs routine first echelon maintenance to the equipment.
- Drives equipment to work site and directs activities of Laborer in placing blocks and outriggers to prevent capsizing when lifting heavy loads.
- Starts equipment engines. Moves levers and pedals to operate booms and other accessories on equipment, to raise and lower, and to move through other actions
This position is part of the City’s Emergency Management Team and, as such, shall be expected to perform all duties that are assigned during an emergency management operation. Any additional compensation, above the normal weekly salary shall be outlined by the City Manager in the City’s Emergency Management Activation and Emergency Declaration.

Education and Experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) desired; or five (5) years experience in the operation and routine maintenance of the type of equipment of primary assignment.
- Related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations
o Class B Commercial Driver’s License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Experience operating equipment listed in the job description.
- Skill in the operation of heavy construction equipment.
- Physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions.

- Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions ranging from over 100 degrees to below 32 degrees and is regularly exposed to vibration.
