Overview
As a Firefighter, you will play a crucial role in protecting lives and property by responding to emergencies, extinguishing fires, and providing medical assistance. This position requires a high level of physical fitness, teamwork, and dedication to public safety. Firefighters are often the first responders in emergency situations and must be prepared to handle a variety of challenges in high-pressure environments.
Duties
- Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls. Selects hose nozzle, depending on type of fire, and directs stream of water or chemicals onto fire.
- Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings or to assist individuals from burning structures.
- Creates openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance.
- Protects property from water and smoke by use of salvage covers and smoke ejectors.
- Ventilates burning buildings to eject smoke and gases. Performs salvage and cleanup operations at fire scenes.
- Rescues and removes persons from danger. Administers first aid and artificial respiration and emergency medical treatment to injured persons and those overcome by fire and smoke.
- Inspects buildings for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention ordinances.
- Performs cleaning and maintenance tasks on apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, grounds, and hydrants.
- Makes periodic inspections of buildings to locate fire hazards.
- Issues forms to building owners, listing fire regulation violations to be corrected.
- Drives and operates fire-fighting vehicles and equipment.
- Participates in drills, demonstrations, and courses in hydraulics, pump operation and maintenance, and firefighting techniques.
- Performs related work as required. These additional duties may be representative of tasks typically performed by those in a lesser or more advanced job grade.
This position is part of the City’s Emergency Management Team and, as such, shall be expected to perform all duties that are assigned during an emergency management operation. Any additional compensation, above the normal weekly salary shall be outlined by the City Manager in the City’s Emergency Management Activation and Emergency Declaration.
Skills
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations
o Certification as a Firefighter by the State of Florida.
o Certification as an EMT by the State of Florida.
o Florida Drivers License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before citizens and employees of the City.
- Ability to comprehend and apply principles of mathematical concepts applied to this position.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to learn the geography of the City with respect to streets, hydrants, and building construction and access information.
- Ability to learn the location and layout of all high risk and special hazard occupancies, and the problems encountered with each.
- Skills in the use and maintenance of firefighting equipment.
- Ability to drive fire apparatus over the road safely under emergency conditions.
- Knowledge of the strategy and tactics of handling fire, rescue and medical emergencies and the ability to analyze and respond effectively under stress to each.
