Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Water Treatment Plant Operator to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing the operation of plant equipment and systems, ensuring efficient and safe production processes. This role requires specialized work in the operation of a complex water/wastewater treatment plant auxiliary facilities on an assigned shift.
Duties
- Conduct laboratory testing for quality control.
- Maintain log of all operational activities.
- Inspect pumps, motors, levels, controls general plant condition and wellfields.
- Monitor plant controls, alarms and instrumentation.
- Perform Operator level preventive maintenance of plant and equipment.
- Participates in making minor repairs to mechanical equipment, reports major breakdowns. Informs plant supervisor of mechanical defects. Assists with maintenance, repair and the overhaul of machinery and equipment.
- Regulates rate of water flow to and from filters. Puts filters into and out of line. Washes filters. General regulates machines adding chemicals to water under treatment. Replenishes machines with various chemicals as needed and reads and changes a variety of charts and meters. Keeps log sheets and prepares operating reports. Maintains proper water pressure and water storage levels as required.
- May be required to operate sludge press operations and drive sludge truck.
- Attend work promptly and regularly.
- Perform related work as required. These additional duties may be representative of tasks typically performed by those in a lesser or more advanced job grade.
This position is part of the City’s Emergency Management Team and, as such, shall be expected to perform all duties that are assigned during an emergency management operation.
Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) desired. Current class C Operator Certification by the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) as a water operator or wastewater operator as appropriates for the particular position
- Class C operator certificate from the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for the appropriate position. Acquisition of 1.0 to 2.0 continuing education units biannually to maintain state certification.
- Florida class B Commercial Drivers License for water treatment plant operators only
- Knowledge of methods and practical water/wastewater treatment and of standards and normal operating procedures applicable to treatment.
- Knowledge of the functions and mechanics of pumps and other plant mechanical equipment.
- Knowledge of the implications of improper treatment for community health and well-being.
- Knowledge of general laboratory testing procedures and methods.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees, governmental agencies, and the general public.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to inspect machinery and other mechanical equipment in operation and to detect flaws and defects in operation.
- Ability to read meters and charts accurately, to maintain records of shift operations, and to perform simple chemical analyses accurately.
- Ability to adjust treatment procedures to meet requirements of volumes to be treated.
