Major Function and Purpose
This seasonal position performs ongoing maintenance to enhance the functionality and appearance of City properties to ensure that they are attractive, clean, safe, and suitable for use by the public.
General Function
Under general direction of the Operations Supervisor or others as assigned, this position performs landscape and building maintenance in municipal parks and other facilities as assigned.

Accordingly, individuals occupying this position will be required to follow any job-related instructions, tasks, or other duties as assigned by the Director or designee, and must be able to proficiently perform all assigned duties.
- Competently operate a variety of tools and power equipment including power driven machinery, rotating machinery, weed whackers, and hand tools such as hammer, saw, screwdriver, pick, shovel, spade, rake, etc.
- Perform lawn and landscaping maintenance, including mowing, digging, watering, pulling weeds, applying herbicides, trimming shrubbery, and moving dirt and/or debris.
- Clean, paint, and perform routine maintenance and repair to public areas, City parks, and playground equipment to keep them in functional order.
- Perform aesthetic maintenance for the City parks.
- Assist with repairing under ground irrigation systems.
- Reliable and regular attendance is required.

Contacts and Relationships
Seasonal Public Works employees have extensive contact with City employees and the public.
Working Conditions
Work is performed either indoors or outdoors in all types of weather conditions. May be required to work in noisy areas. May be exposed to dampness, direct sunlight, dust, pollen, machinery or its moving parts, pesticides, insecticides, chemicals, noxious fumes, and/or insect stings. May be required to wear protective clothing or equipment in the performance of duties, including rubber boots, rubber/plastic gloves, safety glasses or goggles, ear protection devices, hard hats, respirators, and/or other specialized protective/safety equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the operation of a variety of hand and power tools such as lawnmower, blower, and weed eater; safety protocols; and landscape maintenance operations and procedures.
Ability to efficiently and appropriately coordinate tasks for the effective completion of daily work and problem resolution; establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with coworkers and the public; work independently; self-motivate; pay attention to detail; maintain plants and lawns in an aesthetically pleasing manner; read and comprehend instructions; and operate lawn care equipment, including rotary and reel lawn mowers, weed-eaters, chainsaws, and common landscaping hand tools (e.g. shovels, rakes, hoes, etc.).
Physical Requirements
Seasonal Public Works employees must have the overall stamina and ability to perform moderate to strenuous physical activity, including the ability to stand or walk for long periods of time; traverse rough terrain; work in or over water; work at heights or on scaffolding; and lift or carry up to fifty (50) pounds. Job requirements include the ability to climb, bend, and/or work in tight or confined areas. Must be able to hear alarms and have the ability to audibly identify the presence o fa danger or hazard.
Minimum Requirements
High School diploma or GED is required. Demonstrated proficiency in the use of hand tools, landscaping tools and equipment, and in the operation of light and heavy equipment are also required. Valid driver’s license required upon hire. Out of state candidates are required to obtain a WA state driver’s license in accordance with state law.
Preferred qualifications include previous experience in parks maintenance and/or utility maintenance.
Any combination of experience and training that provides the desired skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
