What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Director- Parks & Recreation Department position at City of Port St. Lucie?
Camp is scheduled to start June 9, 2025 and ending August 8, 2025.
- Keeps the mission, vision, and values of the City of Port St. Lucie at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives, maintains high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
- Participates in orientation training. Becomes familiar with and implements camp policies, procedures, and philosophy as stated in the Summer Camp Staff Manual and learns the role of the Summer Camp Director. Complies with established policies, procedures, and regulations of the Parks & Recreation Department and the City.
- Greets the public; answers questions about registered participants from parents; meets parents, legal guardians, and care providers daily or as needed and discusses the camper’s week with them.
- Organizes and sets up programs and activities; gathers materials, supplies, and equipment for use in implementing plans; and supervises recreation activities.
- Resolves differences that may arise during play.
- Assists at all camp check-ins and check-outs with assigned roles and responsibilities.
- Participates in all activities with campers. Encourages and facilitates camper’s participation in all activities by implementing appropriate strategies with supervisory staff.
- Opens and closes the summer camp program, checking the summer camp designated area for any safety issues and reporting any maintenance issues within this area.
- Maintains the cleanliness of all areas of camp utilized by campers and camp staff. Completes assigned job duties. Stores supplies appropriately after use.
- Monitors campers’ actions and activities to ensure adherence to standard and established safety policies, procedures, guidelines, and operating requirements.
- Plans and implements activities for the camp participants.
- May be responsible for purchasing field trip admissions, supplies, and other items necessary for the implementation of summer camp with a City Purchasing Card.
- Ensures the safe and appropriate conduct of campers; addresses chronic misconduct to prevent injuries to campers, staff, or the public.
- Supervises, directs, and evaluates all Summer Camp staff members.
- Reacts quickly, calmly, and appropriately in emergency situations.
- Other duties as may be assigned.
May oversee the work of non-supervisory employees. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the City’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Working with children in a camp setting, and recreation supervisory experience preferred.
- Must be able to work the entire camp session.
- Must have transportation to all sites and be able to work various hours between 7:15am to 6:00pm.
- Valid Florida Driver's License and maintenance of clean driving record.

The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
