This position is Essential and is required to report to duty before, during, and immediately after a civil emergency.

Skilled electrical and technical work assisting with the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signals, streetlights, and other electrical traffic control devices. Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City.

The starting salary for this position is $26.58-$30.56 depending on qualifications 

This position will require scheduled and unscheduled overtime, including evenings, weekends and holidays, and requires immediate response to emergency conditions.
The following duties are illustrative for this position.  The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.  Other duties may be required and assigned.  

  • Keeps the mission, vision and values of the City of Port St. Lucie at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives, maintains high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
  • Assists with the performance of field maintenance and repairs utilizing tools and techniques of the trade, including the use of a bucket truck and/or other means of access.
  • Prepares surveys and analytical reports on preventive maintenance results on electrical systems and recommendations for alterations and additions to existing procedures and methods.
  • May perform preventative maintenance including, but not limited to cleaning optical systems, replacing video detectors, and adjusting cables and/or fixtures.
  • Assists with the programming and maintenance of closed loop systems within the City.
  • Assists with the maintenance of parts and equipment inventory. Assists with documentation and maintenance of records associated with all equipment and facilities.
  • Performs after-hours emergency stand-by on a rotational basis, as required.
  • Assists with identifying system problems, solves electronic failures, and provides remedies to restore system proficiency.
  • Assist with the observation, inspection, and coordination of signal and lighting installation associated with the City’s capital roadway and intersection improvement program.
  • May be required to work hours other than standard day shift.
  • Works during emergency situations as required. 
  • Other duties may be assigned.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience:
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and possession of a Journeyman’s Electrician License required. Two (2) years prior electrical field experience, ideally for a comparable entity, performing similar job functions preferred. Additional college coursework is preferred.  

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Possession of Valid Florida Driver’s License and maintenance of clean driving record required. Class B Driver’s License Permit required to be obtained within thirty (30) days of date of hire. Class B Driver’s License required to be obtained within nine (9) months of date of hire. Possession of a Journeyman’s Electrician License required.

  • International Municipal Sign Association (IMSA) – Work Zone Safety certification required to be obtained within six (6) months of date of hire.
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I Traffic Signal Certification required to be obtained within twelve (12) months of date of hire.
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level II Traffic Signal Certification required to be obtained within twenty-four (24) months of date of hire.
  • Advanced work zone safety required to be obtained within twelve (12) months of date of hire.
Knowledge, Skill and/or Ability Required: 
  • Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools, codes, and practices of the electrical trade, as well as electric circuitry involving motors, breakers, relays, etc.
  • Skill in the care of the tools and equipment of the electrical trade.
  • Ability to plan, layout, and perform electrical work of average difficulty.
  • Ability to work from blueprints and/or sketches.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Knowledge of standard National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) devices such as monitors, controllers, master controllers, amplifiers, conflict monitors, and interconnect materials.
  • Knowledge of National Electrical Codes; Federal, State, and County standards and specifications for traffic signal devices and traffic safety testing equipment.
  • Knowledge of federal and state uniform traffic control guidelines.
  • Ability to schedule maintenance, repairs, and inspection of the City’s traffic system.
  • Knowledge of federal and state uniform traffic control guidelines.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and locate defective devices and make proper repairs.
  • Broad knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Ability to focus on the positive in every situation.
  • Ability to model respect for individuals, teams, and the organization.
  • Ability to stay centered when challenged.
  • Ability to establish and maintain and the trust and confidence of the department, City employees, and the public.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to follow through with assigned tasks.


               While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch, and drive. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.   Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions that may be adverse and extreme (heat, humidity, cold, rain, etc.). The employee is frequently exposed to noise, dust, fumes, airborne particles, uneven surfaces, heights, and stressful situations.
 
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
