Want to get paid to be outdoors providing great customer service while bicycling, hiking, or patrolling parks?
A responsible, self-motivated, independent individual is needed on our Park Ranger team. This position patrols parks, creates positive interactions with patrons, assists with event traffic / parking, identifies maintenance needs, participates in the operation of the ice rink, educates patrons on park policies as necessary, and other duties as assigned. Must be available year-round with strong availability for all three shifts, including weekends. Ranger schedule consists of three shifts ranging from 6-8 hours each, 21-28 hours / week, 4-5 days / week :
Seasonal Park Hours :
Winter (Nov. 1-Feb) : 7 AM-7 PM;
Spring / Fall (Mar-April & Sept.-Oct) 7 AM-9 PM;
Summer (May-Aug.) 7 AM -10 PM
Shifts :
Open Shift - (Park opens at 7 AM) Shift 6 AM - 2 PM
Patrol Shift – 10 AM-6 PM or 11 AM -7 PM (depending on season)
Close Shift -2 PM – Close or 3 PM-Close (depending on season)
- Standard Winter hours / shifts are three or four 7-hour shifts per week. Standard Spring / Summer / Fall hours / shifts are three 8-hour shifts per week
Rangers assigned the opening shift will split up the 20 parks, unlock as necessary, and check each park to make sure everything is in good shape, clean up any areas that require it, and report any repairs that need to be made. There may be other items assigned through a task list to finish out their shift and / or continued patrolling of the assigned parks. The closing shift will do the opposite of the opening shift, while the patrol shift will be assigned parks to patrol via foot, gator, bicycle, or pickup truck. While out making sure the paths, trails, and equipment are in good repair, Rangers will engage with park patrons that they come across, educate patrons on park policies if necessary, and remain observant of any repairs or findings that may need to be addressed. In addition, Rangers assist at the parks and recreation events in various capacities such as running fish camps, and directing traffic for parking. Such events may include concerts, movies, Ramona Park Luau, Ramona Park bonfire, Pig Out in the Park, receptions at Celery Flats, reading or hiking with a ranger, Monster Mash, and traditional holiday set-up.
From December to the end of February, Rangers will still have park shifts, if weather appropriate, however, the focus will be on running the Millennium Park Ice Rink. Duties may include sidewalk and ice preparation, concessions, admissions, and skate rental assistance, etc. The rink is open TH-Sun from 3-9 PM, except over holiday break when the park is open daily.
Hours / shifts vary based on the seasonal park hours. Strong availability is desired, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Candidate must be comfortable working in all types of weather. Experience working with the public preferred, with excellent customer service, leadership, and judgment skills required. Must have a high school diploma or GED and be at least 18. Requires a valid Michigan driver's license with a good driving record. The starting rate is $15.99 / hr. (no benefits). Candidate must be able to successfully pass a general background check and drug / alcohol screen, including marijuana.
