CITY OF PORTERVILLE
LIFEGUARD
DEFINITION:
Under general direction, responsible for ensuring the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding
to emergencies. Introduction to patrons swim strokes/dive fundamentals, confidence in the water, and water
safety.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Duties may include:
1. Provide leadership at pool site.
2. Recognize and respond effectively in emergencies.
3. Communicate with supervisors, parents, participants, and staff members in a professional and
positive attitude at all times.
4. Enforce all safety rules and programs regulations, policies and procedures.
5. Perform a variety of tasks incidental to the operation of the programs.
6. Participate in in-service training sessions.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINE:
KNOWLEDGE:
Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures.
Decision making skills.
ABILITY TO:
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, children and adults; establish and
maintain a safe and healthy environment for participants involved in activities, programs and lessons;
communicate effectively in oral and written form; exercise good judgment; and adhere to Rules and
Regulations set forth by City of Porterville.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Certified in Lifeguard Training and First Aid.
SPECIAL CONDITION:
Prior to appointment candidates must pass a background check, drug/alcohol screen and TB test.
