Position Summary:
Portland Parks & Recreation's (PP&R) Environmental Education program offers programs in our city's parks and natural areas to connect Portlanders to nature all year long. Programs include summer nature camps, youth classes, school field trips, guided nature walks, youth employment programs, volunteer stewardship and special events that focus on connection to nature. The voter-approved 2020 Parks Operating Levy stated that PP&R would expand access to nature. Our Environmental Education program has grown and expanded to help meet this goal.

This position will lead teams that get youth out into nature and provides outdoor work experiences for young adults. PP&R Environmental Education staff plan, organize, coordinate, lead, and evaluate nature educational programs for youth and young adults. They introduce youth to nature; help provide racial and cultural diversity to the natural resources field and increase stewardship in our region.
The Supervisor position will be responsible for the operations of the entire Environmental Education work unit and provide daily support and guidance to the team of permanent and casual staff. This position will support the various programs such as Youth Conservation Crew, Teen Nature team, Summer Nature Day Camp, Ladybug Walks, school field trips and natural area stewardship. The Supervisor will also work to guide the program’s growth with a sustainable and equitable approach.
What you'll get to do:
- Recruit, hire, train, schedule, assign work to, and supervise staff, including casual/seasonal employees.

- Assist in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of Environmental Education programs and projects.
- Lead and support the Environmental Education department, including a year-round team of approximately 10 - 15 Community Service Aides and 4 Botanic Specialist II’s and oversight of approximately 100 - 115 summer Casual staff members. Team development includes creating team building opportunities for staff, and leading productive and engaging team meetings.
- Support nature education activities for middle and high school students and young adults, from the office and in the field. Programs include science and nature education, community building, stewardship, outdoor recreation, skill building and workforce development in various natural areas and parks across Portland.
- Oversee summer nature camps and school year nature classes for youth/ families. Logistics include emergency plans, standard operating procedures, staff training, and registration. Programs include nature-based activities for over 2,000 children ages 0-16 across Portland.
- Assist in the development, monitoring & reporting of the unit’s budget, including revenue forecasts and cost analysis of programs and projects.
- Build ties to diverse community-based organizations and other partners to increase access to nature for Portlanders of all ages and backgrounds.
- Create standard practices, policies, safety guidelines and procedures for day-to-day operations of the unit, programs, projects, or tasks; establish goals and direction and communicate expectations to staff.
- Conduct oversight of performance requirements and personal development targets for staff; provide coaching for performance; evaluate performance, conduct performance reviews & discipline.

- Experience leading or supervising the work of other employees, youth, teens and/or volunteers including recruiting, training, mentoring, leading meetings, team building, coaching and onsite support.
- Experience designing and using curricular plans for outdoor science education in the field, including applying safety guidelines, regulations, and policies that pertain to outdoor science education.
- Ability to build a workplace culture that prioritizes equity and demonstrates an environment respectful of living and working in a multicultural society.
- Experience with the fundamentals and methods of budget creation, monitoring and reporting, including revenue forecasts and public budget management.
- Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and navigating conflict with internal and external stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, such as co-workers, diverse community groups, staff, volunteers, professional organizations, the public, youth, teen, and others.
- 4-year degree in Education, Environmental Education, Science Education, Environmental Science, Park & Recreation Management, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
- Experience working for a public agency or in park & recreation administration.
- Two (2) years of experience performing work like that of direct reports, in the outdoor nature education field.
- A valid state driver's license and an acceptable driving record
- The ability to work outdoors in various environments, including uneven terrain and diverse weather conditions.
- The ability to obtain First Aid/CPR Certification within 6 months of hire.
