The Position
The Portland Water Bureau is seeking qualified candidates to join them as Fisheries Technicians (Community Service Aide II)!
About The Position
Job Appointment: Casual
Work Schedule: Schedule will vary based on season and could be impacted by weather, river flow conditions, and other factors. These roles will work closely with their supervisor regarding their schedule.
Early March 2025-September 2025: During this time frame, these roles are expected to work approximately 35-40 hours per week (8-10 hours per day). Weekend work may be required - Some fisheries will be open on Saturdays and Sundays.
October 2025 - Mid-December 2025: During this timeframe, these roles will work up to 10 hours per week.
Note: These Community Service Aide (CSA II) positions have a maximum of 1,400 hours in a calendar year.

Position Summary
The Portland Water Bureau is seeking one to three applicants with fisheries experience to assist in the collection of field data in 2025. These are seasonal positions that will begin work in March 2025 and will extend through the spring, summer, and fall field seasons.
The Fisheries Technicians would report to work at the Bureau’s Emergency Operations Center, which is at the intersection of Powell Blvd. and SE 99th Ave. From there, they would drive in a Bureau vehicle to assigned work sites. The fisheries work would focus on monitoring juvenile salmonid smolt traps in the spring, conducting fish and fish habitat surveys in the summer, and completing adult salmon counts in the fall. Other duties will be assigned as time allows.
The Fisheries Technicians will work under the direction of Water Bureau staff, but at times will do field work on their own with other Technicians. The Fisheries Technicians may be cross trained to perform other biological duties as assigned by the Water Bureau.

To Qualify
Qualifications
The following minimum qualifications are required for these positions:
- Ability and knowledge of standard office operating procedures, such as basic computer usage, typing, and filing.
- Ability to effectively and safely navigate and work in remote areas. This includes, but is not limited to: walking on uneven terrain and in and/or next to swift-flowing water, ability to swim.
- Ability to lift and carry objects up to 100 pounds for short distances and work outdoors in all weather conditions. Some of this work may be on uneven terrain.
- Knowledge of and experience with performing accurate data recording and record keeping
- Knowledge and ability to identify juvenile and adult salmonids native to the Pacific Northwest.
- Possess a valid state driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment.
The following qualifications are helpful, but not required to apply :
- Previous knowledge and experience operating rotary smolt traps
- Previous knowledge and experience conducting fish habitat surveys
- Previous knowledge and experience snorkeling and operating a backpack electroshocker
- Previous knowledge and experience identifying and counting spawning salmon and redds
