JOB SUMMARY: Employees in this class are under the supervision of the Head Utility Inspector. The work to be performed is to inspect gas, water & sewer line construction to ensure compliance with municipal requirements, specifications, and contracts. Duties also include support services for other employees in the entire utilities department. Instructions are somewhat general, though occasionally, the employee may need to consider different courses of action or deviate from standard operating procedures to get the job done. The Head Utility Inspector will check work as it is being done, and review completed work. The employee will routinely operate a light duty vehicle, a generator, leak detector, pipe and valve locators, and hand tools such as shovel, hoe, rake, wrenches, etc.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. · Assist the Head Utility Inspector in monitoring and maintaining water quality of the water system.
· Administers the flushing program (creating and adjusting according to system data) for the distribution system in order to keep the system in compliance with the State of Tennessee.
· Maintains chlorine residual in the system
· Programs, maintains and operates permanent and temporary auto flushers
· Documents all data in the flushing app
· Informs supervisors of blow offs, valves and hydrants that need to be repaired or replaced.
· inspect gas, water & sewer lines construction to ensure compliance with municipal requirements.
· Inspect utility & related construction projects for compliance with plans, specifications, and standards.
· Perform backflow device inspections, as assigned.
· Performs other related duties, as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. · Knowledge of materials and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of water mains, service lines, fire hydrants and water valves.
· Knowledge of occupational health and safety precautions;
· Ability to meet the physical demands of the job and pass post-offer, pre-employment physical, drug screen and background check;
· Ability and basic skills to use and operate the necessary machinery, tools and equipment to perform the job;
· Ability to read, understand, and follow both verbal and written instructions;
· Ability to read water meters and maps;
· Ability to inspect gas, water & sewer line construction;
· Ability to work under extreme weather conditions and for extended periods of time;
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and customers;
· Ability to maintain acceptable work performance and attendance record;
· Good communication skills;
· Ability to keep a good rapport with contractors and developers during inspection;
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
· High School Diploma, or GED;
· 5 years of work experience; in Utilities field: working outdoors and with hand tools;
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
· Valid driver’s license required;
· CrossConnection Certification Required
