Reports to: Division Commander
Job Summary: Portsmouth Sheriff's Office is seeking a professional and experienced Part Time Certified Deputy. The Part-Time Certified Deputy is responsible for maintaining order, enforcing laws, and providing security within the judicial building in Portsmouth, Virginia. This role involves ensuring the safety of judges, court staff, and the public, as well as the secure transport of detainees. The Deputy will work closely with other law enforcement personnel to uphold the security and integrity of the courthouse operations
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Maintain Courtroom Security: Maintain a secure environment in the courtroom by monitoring proceedings, ensuring the safety of all participants, and preventing any disruptions.
- Building Patrol: Regularly patrol the judicial building, including entrances, exits, hallways, and courtrooms, to detect and address any security concerns or unauthorized activities.
- Detainee Transport: Safely transport detainees to and from courtrooms, detention facilities, and other required locations, ensuring they are securely restrained and monitored.
- Law Enforcement: Enforce local, state, and federal laws within the courthouse, including serving warrants, making arrests, and responding to any illegal activities.
- Respond to Emergencies: Act as the first responder to any emergencies within the judicial building, including medical incidents, fires, or security threats, and coordinate with other emergency services as necessary.
- Resolve Conflicts: Manage conflicts that may arise in or around the courthouse, including de-escalating situations and ensuring a peaceful resolution.
- Assist the Public: Provide information and assistance to the public, including giving directions, answering inquiries about court procedures, and offering support to those involved in court proceedings.
- Report Writing: Prepare detailed incident reports, court documents, and other necessary paperwork to document any security breaches, arrests, or other significant occurrences.
- Manage Weapons and Equipment: Regularly inspect and maintain all assigned weapons, gear, and other equipment to ensure they are in proper working condition.
- Collaborative Work: Work in collaboration with other deputies, law enforcement agencies, and courthouse personnel to maintain a coordinated and efficient security operation.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Certification: Must be a certified law enforcement officer in the state of Virginia, with current and active certification from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).
Experience: Min of 3 years of law enforcement experience, preferably in a courthouse or judicial environment.
Knowledge: Strong understanding of local, state, and federal laws, as well as court procedures and legal terminology
Physical Fitness: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including standing for long periods, restraining individuals, and responding to emergencies.
Attention to Detail: Keen observation skills to detect potential security risks and enforce courthouse rules effectively.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with the public, court staff, and other law enforcement personnel.
Conflict Management: Proven ability to handle conflicts and stressful situations calmly and effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
Court Experience: Previous experience working in a court or judicial environment is highly desirable.
First Aid/CPR Certification is a plus
