Normal work schedule is 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. M-F
Pretrial Officer: $42,500 / year or higher DOQ
Education & Experience:
Comparable experience or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, or closely related field.
This position requires the employee to perform responsible professional work by supervising adult defendants placed on pretrial supervision. Work is performed independently within established policies and procedures. This position reports to the Community Corrections and Pretrial Director. Probation period: 6 months.
Essential Job Functions/Requirements:
- Supervise defendants placed on pretrial supervision and Global Positioning System (GPS) by the Courts or Magistrates in accordance with the conditions and terms of their bail.
- Assess risk of defendants through use of a Pretrial Risk Assessment Instrument.
- Ensure objectives/conditions are conveyed to and understood by defendant.
- Notify supervised defendants of court dates and assist them in attending court when necessary.
- Inform the court promptly of compliance or noncompliance that may warrant modification of release conditions and of any arrest of a supervised defendant pending trial.
- Prepare progress reports for the Courts and provide testimony in Court, as necessary.
- Document supervision contacts.
- Perform on-site drug and/or alcohol tests.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the criminal justice system and demonstrable skill in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing. Proficiency with computers, familiarity with software applications and excellent keyboarding skills required for employment. This position requires competency in Legal Evidenced Based Practices to include core knowledge of pretrial interviewing techniques and risk assessments. Successfully complete a criminal background investigation. Successfully complete training as required by the Department of Criminal Justice Services. Attain and maintain VCIN certification. Must maintain National Association of Pretrial Services Agencies (NAPSA) certification. Possess a valid Virginia Driver's License and have an acceptable driving record. Ability to conduct himself/herself in a professional manner always, while treating all people with respect and dignity. Always represent the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office and Portsmouth Community Corrections and Pretrial Services positively in public.
