Class Specifications

The primary function of an employee in this class is to perform general labor maintenance and repair work on City streets and rights-of-ways while assisting other street maintenance workers. This is an entry level position and work is performed under the direct supervision of the Street Field Supervisor or a designated crew leader. CDL license (CL B w/ tanker endorsement minimum) is required for this position. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment and may include working in adverse weather conditions. Hazards may involve the use of power tools and equipment and working in traffic areas.

Examples of Work Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled duties including, but not limited to maintenance and repair of City streets, sidewalks and rights-of-ways;
  • Operates a variety of vehicle and heavy equipment, including but not limited to: dump truck, water tanker, bucket truck, mini excavator, crack sealer, front-end loader, paver, pavement roller, backhoe, sweeper, snow plowing and sanding equipment, and other related equipment;
  • Performs snow plowing (and other snow related duties) as directed by Supervisor. This includes plowing as part of a night shift and extended hours during winter events.
  • Assists in asphalt and concrete repair operations, including operation of saw cutters, setting forms, and finishing;
  • Removes debris and other safety hazards from streets, curbs, storm drains, alleys, and adjacent public areas;
  • Maintains and repairs street signs fences, guard rails, and application of roadway paint;
  • Assists in minor traffic signal maintenance;
  • Assists in work zone traffic control device installation as well as flagging duties;
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices;
  • May be placed On-Call duty outside of regular work hours;
  • Ensure Fleet vehicles and equipment are properly serviced and clean;
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations on a 24-hour basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:


  • Federal (OSHA) and state regulations and City policies regarding safe work practices relating to use of power tools.
Ability to:
  • Learn the operation of all equipment as well as the maintenance practices established in the Street Division. This includes: equipment operation, asphalt paving, concrete placement and repairs, snow removal operations, hand and power tools;
  • Learn the methods, materials, procedures, and standard practices of street and right-of-way maintenance including concrete and asphalt repairs, snow plowing operations, and equipment operation.
  • Follow written and oral instructions;
  • Communicate professionally with the public and other employees;
  • Learn to proficiently operate computer and related software programs as necessary to perform assigned work;
  • Work cooperatively as part of a team;
  • Operate a motor vehicle;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency is required; and
  • Two (2) or more years of municipal or government employment experience; or
  • Any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and abilities required to successfully perform the responsibilities of this position.
