What are the responsibilities and job description for the Camp Lifeguard position at City of Post Falls?
The Lifeguards’ primary responsibility will be to oversee all waterfront and water related activities for the summer day camp; Camp Ka-Mee-Lin. A Camp Lifeguard assists in planning activities that teach water safety and awareness, executes weekly swim tests, attends field trips or campouts which have pools or waterfronts and ensures camper safety and wellness during swimming times.
During certain hours of the camp day, the Lifeguards could also be responsible for monitoring small groups of campers within the larger setting. This position is under the direct supervision of the Camp Director and Recreation Supervisor, although some latitude is allowed for independent judgment and initiative. The principal duties of the position are performed outdoors and are subject to inclement weather conditions.
- Follow established policies for swimming area.
- Prevent incidents by maintaining proper control of swim area.
- Test and classify camp swimmers, alerting staff to swimmers needing attention.
- Supervise a group of campers and/or assist Camp Counselors as assigned.
- Plan and teach water safety games and activities during initial weeks of camp.
- Prepare swim area/beach for camp activity.
- Assist with facilitating campers changing for swimming; monitor changing rooms as requested.
- Assist with overseeing activities during Extended Care, if scheduled.
- Observe necessary precautions to secure the safety of campers for all activities.
- Maintain first aid and rescue equipment for the waterfront.
- Attend trainings and staff in-service sessions as scheduled.
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Ability to handle difficult or stressful situations in a professional manner.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
- Endurance to maintain constant supervision of campers.
- Communicate effectively with participants, parents, other City employees, and the public.
- One plus (1 ) year(s) experience in youth activities preferred.
- Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR and Open Water Safety Lifeguard Certification scheduled by Parks and Recreation.
- Possess the physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds.
- Satisfactory criminal background investigation check.
