Job Summary:
The Recreation Director plays a pivotal role in enriching the quality of life for community members by developing, overseeing, and implementing a wide range of recreational programs. Reporting to the City Manager, this position involves administrative leadership, creative and traditional program planning, and staff management. The Director is responsible for designing creative and innovative recreational programs, managing facility operations, promoting community engagement, and ensuring fiscal accountability within the recreation program budget. A successful Recreation Director has strong leadership skills, passion and commitment to promoting health, inclusion, and lifelong learning through recreational opportunities. This role involves a high degree of public interaction and the ability to foster collaboration among diverse community groups. Work is evaluated through periodic reviews, program outcomes, and community feedback.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plan, organize, implement, and evaluate diverse recreational programs, leagues, and special events that address the needs of all age groups within the community.
Identify trends in recreation and adapt program offerings to ensure innovation and relevance.
Oversee the development and execution of marketing strategies, including preparing brochures, newsletters, press releases, and social media content to promote programs effectively.
Manage and maintain accurate records of program activities, participation, and outcomes for reporting and analysis.
Staff Leadership and Supervision
Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate program instructors, volunteers, and part-time staff.
Develop and implement ongoing professional development and training initiatives for recreation staff.
Establish clear performance goals and ensure accountability among staff through regular evaluations and feedback.
Facility and Resource Management
Coordinate the use, scheduling, and maintenance of recreational facilities to ensure safety and operational efficiency.
Manage contracts and agreements for facility rentals and third-party services
Monitor and purchase necessary supplies, equipment, and materials for program delivery.
Community Engagement and Partnerships
Serve as the primary liaison with community groups, civic organizations, schools, and local businesses to promote partnerships and expand recreational opportunities.
Foster inclusive programming that addresses the needs of underrepresented groups within the community
Represent the Recreation Department at public meetings, events, and outreach initiatives to increase program visibility and community participation.
Budget and Administrative Oversight
Develop, monitor, and manage the recreation program budget to ensure cost-effective operations.
Research and apply for grants, sponsorships, and other funding opportunities to support program development.
Ensure compliance with all relevant safety standards, regulations, and certifications.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Program Expertise: Comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of public recreation administration and program development.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in recreation program management, with at least two years in a supervisory role.
- Valid Class B driver’s license (or ability to obtain within a specified time).
- CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a related field.
- Certifications such as Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) or Certified Parks and Recreation Executive (CPRE).
- Experience managing recreation programs in a municipal or public sector environment.
- Proven track record of securing external funding through grants or sponsorships.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings and may involve occasional evening and weekend hours.
- Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, operate equipment, and participate in recreational activities as needed.
