The Temporary Maintenance Worker – Public Works employees may serve in the Streets, Stormwater, or Traffic Maintenance Divisions of the Public Works Department under the direct supervision of the supervisor of the respective division to which the employee is assigned.  The Temporary Maintenance Worker – Public Works performs a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled manual and labor tasks and equipment operation.
This job description is an overview and is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed.  It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the functions and tasks required of the position.
  • Operating light- to heavy-duty trucks and equipment, including dump trucks and small forklifts to haul or move materials
  • Assisting in loading and unloading materials, supplies, tools, sweepings, debris, and dirt
  • Transporting sweeper debris from streets to landfill
  • Cleaning, maintaining, and repairing sanitary sewers, storm sewers, manholes, drains, roadways, alleys, and catch basins
  • Building concrete forms and placing and finishing concrete
  • Operating air compressors and generators
  • Utilizing hand and power tools including, but not limited to picks, shovels, jackhammers, tampers, and small asphalt rollers to complete assigned tasks
  • Hauling, raking, and applying asphalt to streets
  • Digging ditches
  • Cleaning, maintaining, and repairing equipment associated with roadway painting operations
  • Assisting in construction and installation of traffic control signs, markings, and signals
  • Assisting in laying conduit and foundations
  • Assisting in hanging traffic signal heads, traffic signs, and communication equipment at intersections
  • Assisting with fabrication of traffic signs, including sanding aluminum and peeling sheeting
  • Operating manual and power weed cutters and applying non-restricted chemicals to manage weeds in City property and roadways
  • Operating chain saws and hand saws to trim trees and shrubs and to remove brush
  • Operating various hand, power, and riding mowers to cut grass and mulch
  • Removing snow from City parking lots, sidewalks, and facilities
  • Salting and sanding roadways
  • Removing leaves and trash from City property and roadways
  • Removing graffiti
  • Maintaining landscapes
  • Performing routine repair and maintenance activities including basic plumbing, electrical, and carpentry
  • Assisting in setting up work zone traffic control
  • Performing daily equipment inspections
  • Performing minor repairs to trucks and equipment
  • Completing daily activity reports including materials used and work accomplished
  • Performing other related duties as assigned
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical standards an employee must meet in order to perform the essential job duties with or without a reasonable accommodation include, but are not limited to:
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling equipment and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Frequently standing and walking for prolonged periods of time to observe for safety hazards and perform daily functions
  • Setting traffic cones from the back of a moving vehicle for extended periods of time
  • Frequent climbing of ladders and stairs in a multi-level facility
  • Using manual dexterity to manipulate supplies, tools, and equipment
  • Using visual acuity (near/distant, color, depth perception, and night vision) to read operating manuals and instructions, read field or construction drawings, safely operate a vehicle or equipment, identify hazards, and perform daily functions
  • Ability to perform frequent activities requiring a full range of body movements including sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling, twisting, and balancing
  • Ability to work safely in field conditions with hazards that include traffic and equipment operations, excavations, working at heights, hand and power tool operations, environmental exposure, chemical handling and use, and other job-specific hazards
  • Ability to handle moderate levels of stress and professionally interact with fellow employees and members of the public 
This position requires:
  • Knowledge of mathematical computations and tabulations, sufficient to perform essential functions including arithmetic, multiplication, and division
  • Knowledge of and ability to use common hand and power tools
  • Ability to read a map
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate professionally via two-way radio
  • Ability to learn how to safely operate light- to heavy-duty trucks, including dump trucks
  • Ability to learn to maintain, construct, and repair sanitary and storm sewers, manholes, drains, and other common labor tools
  • Ability to learn to operate power and riding mowers, including brush hogs and gang mowers
  • Ability to learn to operate power trimmers, chain saws, and other power tools
  • Ability to learn to make minor mechanical repairs on trucks and equipment
  • Ability to physically perform the duties of the position, including lifting equipment, materials, and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to safely and lawfully operate a motor vehicle
  • Ability to perform all job duties in a safe manner
In addition to the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above, this position requires the following:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the United States of America
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of application, and a valid Colorado driver’s license within 30 days of employment
    • License restrictions that may hinder your ability to drive on City business, such as an interlock, will be cause for disqualification 
    • During the course of employment, a valid license must be maintained, and the employee must notify the City immediately upon changes to the status of their license
  
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 
Employee may be scheduled to work shifts outside of standard City operating hours (i.e., nights, weekends, holidays, etc.) when required for emergencies or to facilitate work that cannot be safely performed at other times. Employee may be required to work during adverse weather conditions including extreme heat or cold, precipitation, wind, dust storms, and other conditions.
Due to Federal and State Criminal Justice System access requirements, classifications that access and maintain criminal justice information may also be required, as a condition of employment, to not have been convicted of and/or have pending charges of a felony or misdemeanor crime that would deny or otherwise restrict access to criminal justice information.  This requirement applies to all existing City employees as well as external candidates seeking to fill positions that meet the given criteria
