General Description
The individual assumes supervision and swim lesson responsibilities for the safety of patrons using the Pullman Aquatic and Fitness Center and Reaney Park Pool. In this position, an employee may work as Lifeguard and Swim Instructor. Those wishing to only lifeguard will be approved on a case-by-case basis.
Position is Open until filled.
Hiring Criteria
Minimum Qualifications:
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard and First Aid Training Certification
Current American Red Cross CPR/AED Certification
Must teach but not limited to at least 1 session of swim lessons per semester (Fall, Winter/Spring & Summer)
Preferred Qualifications:
Current ARC Water Safety Instructor Certification
Nature of Work
The job requires that the employee work a flexible shift. This may include early mornings, evenings, weekends and occasional holidays. Employees are required to submit a work availability schedule prior to each brochure period (Winter/Spring, Summer, and Fall) with a minimum of 10 hours of availability each week. In the event that a schedule is posted, employees are responsible for finding their own substitutes for scheduled shifts.
Duties and Responsibilities
Lifeguard
- Safety of patrons is the number one priority.
- Good customer service is the number two priority.
- Runs front desk during down rotations provides customer service and answers questions about programs and offerings.
- Enforce PAFC facility rules and maintain proper health standards.
- Uphold a high standard of professionalism for position.
- Respond to emergencies promptly, effectively, and professionally.
- Positively represent PAFC as lifeguard and front desk employee.
- Maintain all necessary certification for position and provide copies of certification to Aquatics Program Coordinator (APC)
- Promote all facility programs thorough knowledge of pool operations and programs.
- Has knowledge of safety rules and regulations and possesses willingness to enforce them.
- Able to exercise good judgment, both with public relations and emergency situations.
- Report accidents and incidents on approved forms.
- Complete employee monthly timesheet by the deadline.
- Perform basic custodial duties for facilities, including but not limited to water quality tests, locker room and deck maintenance.
- Attend all In-Service staff meetings.
Swim Instructors
- Uphold a high standard of professionalism for position.
- Positively represent PAFC as swim instructor.
- Teach swimming skills in accordance with American Red Cross Curriculum In a fun, positive manner.
- Structure Class time appropriately to incorporate repetition, reinforcement and introduction of required skills
- Maintain all necessary certifications for position.
- Provide copies of certification.
- Promote all facility programs.
- Has knowledge of safety rules and regulations and possesses willingness to enforce them.
- Able to exercise good judgment, both with public relations and emergency situations.
- Report accidents and incidents on approved forms.
- Attend all staff meetings.
- Instruct all swim levels to patrons of all ages.
- Develop and implement lesson plans for all assigned classes
- Complete paperwork for swim program in a timely and efficient manner, including but not limited to student progress reports, permit to register, attendance, master progress reports, skill checklist.
Reports to:
Aquatics Program Coordinator, Assistant Aquatics Program Coordinator, and Head lifeguard
Uniform Requirements:
Lifeguarding
Employee Provides:
- Water Bottle
- Navy blue, black, grey or red sport leggings or shorts (shorts must be at or past fingertip length
- Red, Navy Blue, or White Sweatshirt with no logos or our Parks and Recreation logo.
- Flip-flop, sandals, water socks or crocks (Tennis Shoes, Boots, etc are not allowed while guarding at any time)
PAFC Provides:
- Facility issued t-shirt or tank
- Pocket CPR Mask
- Emergency Fanny Pack with Name Tag
- Whistle and break-a-way lanyard
- *Outdoor dress code while lifeguarding may vary, policy available upon request.
Swim Instructor
- One-piece swimsuit or Board shorts
- Sport shorts, must be at or past fingertip length (preferred Navy Blue, Black or Red)

Hours of Employment:
Flexible scheduling with a minimum of 10 hours/week. (Can combine hours with other job positions such as swim Instructor, Private Lesson Instructor, Lifeguard Instructor, Water Fitness Instructor, or Personal Trainer). May occasionally need to work 6 days/week and/or split shifts.
Pay Rate: $17.00 - 18.00/hour DOE
